Set in America in 1962, Green Book tells the heart-warming true story of Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen), a working-class Italian-American bouncer who takes on a job as a chauffeur for Dr. Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali), a world-class Black pianist. The mismatched pair embark on a two-month tour of concert venues in the racially charged deep south and discover they’re on the road to a meaningful and unique friendship. Review: Fantastic Film - Amazing film, Viggo and Hershal have done an outstanding job portraying the two characters. Love the character development within the film, shows how Dr Shirley has a positive influence on Tony. Review: Great book, based on a true story - A very well acted film, covering the relationship that develops between a brilliant ,famous piano player and an not well educated immigrant Italian American "fixer" who drives him around various concert halls in the early winter of a segregated USA. The piano player is black, and looks down on the Italian American whom he finds distasteful, and whom he assumes is a thief amongst other preconceived judgements he makes about his driver. The driver, we see in an early scene, is not too happy to have his wife alone with black plumbers in his apartment, and gets some male cousins to be there too. As the story unfolds, both go on a journey. The actual concerts and travelling are really just a backdrop. The real journey is not the concert halls and towns, although there are many incidents involved. The real journey is how each of the protagonists learns to see, and appreciate the talents and abilities the other person has. Talents and abilities which enrich their lives. The music, and virtuoso skill, and courage of the black piano player, gives a growing appreciation and respect to the driver. In return the piano player learns to appreciate food, jokes, life and beauty in simple things and a different courage from the driver. A great story that deserves a very wide audience.

An interesting story and a good watch
It's an interesting truth-based story and one worthy of a film, certainly. The trick is to avoid the clichéd acting of an Italian-American wisecracking hard man 'minder' from the Bronx - and to present a 1962 black concert pianist in a rightly intelligent and sophisticated way. Throughout, we thought that both principle actors managed that very well (see special features interview with Tony Lip's son). Indeed, Viggo Mortensen all the way through made the character distinctive and real (and likeable) and Mahershala Ali captured a convincing tone and manner (and stance/ bearing) very nicely. Well done both. It could of course have been made darker (a la Mississippi Burning or In the heat of the night) but it made a significant point nonetheless. **Slight spoiler alert** There were, however, a few irritatingly over sweet moments - not least 'getting home for Christmas' (where every cliché seemed to have been employed - a bit cloying to say the least) and the north USA cop pulling them over on the way home, only to be helpful and respectful (in stark contracts to their experience with various southern cops). But that apart we found it a warming and enjoyable film. That it was a double winning Oscar is, however, something of a surprise - but that's academy awards for you. All in all, a very watchable and likeable film that can be viewed more than once.

A marvellous feel good film
A true story, this film is funny, sad, and yet very uplifting. The friendship which develops between two of the most polar opposite characters gives you a feeling that there is real love for your fellow man in this world. Especially the world they venture into- the deep South of the USA in the 1950s. This is a film that will stand the test of time and it is so appropriate for the times we live in. Well worth the price of the DVD.

The Green Book records a sad chapter in America, racism in the 1960s. The film title comes from a real book that was used especially by Black citizens to determine which cities in the Deep South were safe for African-Americans to be out in public after sundown. It also listed hotels and restaurants that served Black Americans. The story or plot line of the movie is based on real events. Dr. Don Shirley, a pianist of genius formed a jazz trio and went on tour into the South in the early 1960s. He traveled alone in his Cadillac with his only company being his white Italian-American chauffeur, Tony Lap. The tour takes place in the eight weeks prior to Christmas Eve. People often compare the film (or rather contrast it) with Driving Miss Daisy. But, that is a mistake. Viewed from that comparison the movie is considered by some film critics and movie makers such as Spike Lee as being racist. The Green Book did win the Oscar for Best Picture and Mahshala Ali won a much-deserved Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Dr. Don Shirley. Viggo Mortensen was nominated for Best Actor, but did not win. My first viewing was like reading a mystery novel. I wanted to focus on Ali and his story. I came away from that screening with the feeling that the movie could indeed be considered racist. It is the product of wealthy and powerful white writers, director, and producers. It is, after all, the story of a Black musical genius during a dangerous tour through Jim Crow America. However, on second and third viewings, I began to realize that movie is about the total transformation of the Italian-American Bronx tough guy, Tony Lap, from a racist New Yorker into a very decent man. The movie is really more about the chauffeur than his famous passenger. The performances are outstanding and the musical score is magnificent. I still think it would be interesting to see a second movie of from the same material, but a version written, produced, and directed (e.g., Spike Lee) by Black artists. Given the expense of film creation, that scenario is highly unlikely. Enjoy Driving Miss Daisy with Jessica Tandy and Morgan friends, just do not confused it with the real-life story of one of America's greatest mid-20th century musical artists. Advice. The Green Book is a movie that must be seen at least twice. Incidentally, a pleasant surprise is the genuine humor in the film such as the subject of whether or not Tony carries a gun. There is also the tender side story of the letters that Tony writes to his wife in his absence at a family time of the year. This movie would make a great discussion point for movie versions of book clubs. Ideally, such a screening should be shown to an audience of both whites and Blacks. It should definitely been seen and discussed. The real Green Book was a horrible book that confirmed and perhaps even glorified racism, but the movie is all about social redemption and it is beautifully filmed.
