Was looking for a well built affordable analog multimeter. The unit is very well built, a bit lighter than I expected. The plastic case is a bit thin, but it does the job to protect the multimeter. The unit has a great size, big enough for good reading, but adequate for portability. It has a great range for DC current (60 µA/30 m/300 mA) and for DC voltages (0.3/3/12/30/120/300/600 V). Keep in mind that the Battery Check 1.5V has a lower resistive load (10 Ω) for measurements under load. Compared to units that cost hundreds more, the only limitations I see are the 600V maximum (some of those units are 1000V) and the maximum range for resistance at 3 kΩ x 1K = 3MΩ (some of those units are 20MΩ). For the price available, this is an excellent Analog Multimeter and value from a reputable company and made in Japan.

This is a well-built, high-quality analog meter. While digital multimeters are great for precision, analog meters like this one offer a different kind of insight, especially when observing dynamic behavior in a circuit. The movement of the needle gives you a real-time sense of trends and fluctuations, which can be much clearer than watching constantly changing numbers on a DMM. It’s a valuable tool to have alongside your digital meter.

This is a professional tool, made in JAPAN, and it is far, FAR superior to the cheap, disposable junk now sold in big-box hardware stores. I've been through two Gardner-Bender units in thirteen months--the first one was D.O.A. when I got it home from the store; the second blew out shortly after the one-year guarantee had expired. I bought my first multimeter in 1971 when I was a mechanic at a motorcycle dealership in New York City. It was a Kawasaki-branded 'shop tool' and it lasted over FIFTY YEARS before 'pilot error' caused a resistor to fry. Unfortunately, the markings on the resistor burned beyond recognition, so there was no way to know what value to use when replacing it since I had lost the schematic that came with it years ago.... This Hioki meter is the first one I've seen since my old one died that looks, acts, and 'feels' like a REAL tool, instead of a disposable plastic toy.
