I'm looking for a pillow that will allow me to sit up in bed to read --not lounge or lie back at a 45 degree angle. Is this the right one?

I would say yes. You will be sitting at a 15-20 degree angle from upright but you will be virtually upright. Don't be concerned when it arrives severely compressed because it really expands when you follow directions. I am happy with mine. There is no headrest but I don't find that to be a problem. Can this pillow provide support free standing or does it need to be learning against a wall or headboard?

This pillow is made with shredded memory foam and can be molded to provide support where you need.
