I purchased this item before exploring if it contained BPA.  Once it arrived, I checked here and saw these answers and was ready to return it.  Before I did, I reached out to Presto's customer service, gave them the Model Number (they also asked for the Series Number, both found at the bottom of the unit).  Their reply was this: "The part on your dehydrator that has BPA in it is the lens in the front of the appliance. There is no food contact with that part."  Just to be double-sure, I asked them specifically: "So to confirm, there is no BPA in the trays themselves, the lid or the center/core of the unit that heats up and moves warm air through the food, is that correct?   The BPA is isolated just in the front lens?"  to which they replied "Correct."  I guess they can't label an item BPA-free if it is contained in any part of the unit.  I too had seen articles mentioning that the trays have BPA, but the article I saw was from 2013.

About how much dried fruit do you get from the 4 trays?

It depends on what your drying. For example, 2 medium apples on 1 tray = 3 cups, 2 sliced Kiwis on 1 tray = 1 cup. Did this help? If not, feel free to ask me more questions.

Can you make dried chicken jerky with this model? I want to make treats for my dogs without adding any spices or preservatives.

I slice organic chicken breast  and put a slice of banana, my dog loves it. Chicken hearts, $160, about 80 pieces, nice treat and cheap!!!! 
I was in petco and baught a dried chicken foot for a dollar so I baught a package of chicken feet at the grocery store for $1.79 and got 27 feet, I brush honey on them and my dog loves them. Thsee chicken feet are great for a small dog. Gizzard are great and cheap too, I sprinkle with cinnamon. Experimentation is the key to see what your dog's favorite treat is. Enjoy!
