Ahead (Sylvan Language Arts Jumbo Workbooks) Review: Fantastic, engaging book! - I love this book. It’s perfect. It’s not too busy and is engaging and age appropriate. My 6 1/2 year old learned to read in kindergarten and this book is exactly what I wanted him to work through for 1st grade language arts. It has fun, age-appropriate activities that are engaging and educational. We homeschool and keep our lessons short so we typically work through 2-3 pages a day and call it good. The activities emphasize his spelling lessons and the phonics he learned in K that we continue to master. Perfect language arts book for kiddos who read well or have just learned to read! I looked and looked for a book like this and am so thankful I found it! The book is thick too and for such a deal! Highly, highly recommend. Review: Great tie-in to school's curriculum - My child's school now teaches reading, English, and spelling out of one "language arts" book, but doesn't send the book home. If a child needs extra studying beyond the homework assignments, we have to find study materials on our own, since nothing is provided by the school. This workbook is tying in nicely to the different chapters covered at school, even though they use a completely different book publisher. The workbook is presented on colorful pages, more like word games than "work," which makes kids more willing to do it, but the material is effective for reinforcing the school lessons. And I was impressed with how many different lessons it covers, it is thorough and worth the price paid. I would recommend this for anyone, homeschooling or not. The one disadvantage, if you are not homeschooling, is that several pages have vocabulary words you will not use.

Sylvan books
I love sylvan products. My son struggled in first grade and I have bought a lot of extra material. Sylvan books have proved to be one of the best. They are thorough. They have a good amount of material in the book. And they have a good, assortment of work. For example, my son likes to do the cross word puzzles which I love because it makes him think logically. He likes the mazes. Because he gets "fun" activities mixed with the traditional fill in the blanks, he will be engaged for longer period of time. I mix the books up every day so it gives him more variety and doesn't burn him out. He has gone from a .5 reading level in September to a 1.8 level last week. It can mix books like this where he reads short sentences and library books and he has just learned so much. Thank you sylvan.

A excellent tool
We use this book for homeschooling our 6 year old. We finished the kindergarten book first and moved on to 1st grade. The books are actually quite large, which is a plus and very understandable. We have looked into purchasing other LA books but the Sylvan books are colorful which is an attention grabber, full of information and great value. No complaints here!

Three great books in one!
I am so glad that I found this, before purchasing the separate books -- all of which I had been looking at, as well. It really does include all three books shown on the cover, and each one is separated within the larger book with it's own cover page. The price was perfect (not much more than any one of the single books would have cost) and I couldn't be happier about the content. Each section includes several pages that focus on that particular reading or spelling rule, or vocabulary type, and it isn't stuffed full of pages that require a ton of writing. I like that it's friendly to my 8yo's hand, since it allows us to still work on "real" content while giving her a break from writing-intensive lessons. We are using this as a content review before moving on to the next level of lessons. The one thing I would change, if I had the option, would be to make the pages perforated. The only reason I would prefer this is that it is a very thick book, so my 8yo has to force it to lay flat enough for her to write on some of the pages, while dealing with the inner spine as an extra impediment against her hand. It certainly isn't a deal-breaker, but I may very well end up needing to remove the pages from the book, and perforated edges would have made that simpler. For the price, however, I won't complain that they didn't make it easy to rip out pages!

Great book. I got them all for end-of-year gifts ...
Great book. I got them all for end-of-year gifts to the kids I tutor in reading, best I've seen. In fact, had to send back a couple others and re-order these for everyone because they are so complete, so engaging and colorful. Lots of games to make it fun. The only thing I'm not sure about is that the directions for the exercises are really written in big words. If a kid can't figure out the exercise on their own, they need adult help to explain the point.
