I am not a teacher, but a piano player myself so I chose this book and the accompanying theory book because it is easy to understand and follow for an adult or child. My son is 11 years old and had no prior musical experience. I read through each lesson with him and used the theory book 1A noted for each lesson. Without much help, he was able to practice on our keyboard. Once he was proficient with one lesson, he would move on to the next. I appreciate the clear direction this book/series gives and highly recommend it to anyone wanting to start their journey of playing the piano.

Great, solid series
I love, love, love this series! I have been teaching private lesions for many years and Alfred does a respectable job of introducing students to piano. It uses an interval approach, helping students recognize where note are relatively, but also insisting on a recognition of note names. The lessons are very logically ordered and new concepts are revisited for weeks in the subsequent pieces, really solidifying them as you go.my only complaint would be their introduction of eighth notes seems a little short. I would like a lot more clap and count style exercise that have very simple notes, but lots of different rhythms using the new eighth notes, similar to what is found at the beginning of Book 2 with dotted notes.

Good starter book for child just learning to play piano or keyboard.
I think Alfred's is a great series for a beginning student. I am trying to teach my 7-year-old grandson to play the keyboard I bought him, but he is not responding to this book like I had hoped he would. I had to buy another book that had songs that were familiar to him, like his dad suggested. This was a big disappointment to me, because I used this book to teach his dad, and he did very well with it!

Great introductory book
Our piano teacher told us to buy this book for my son to start piano lessons. I can see why she chose it. It is a great way to start and gives the child some recognizable songs very early on. It assumes you have zero piano experience and then starts you off on the black keys only. Then it moves you on to the white keys. The illustrations are also nice a cheery. It comes with a CD to play along with (to fill in the music as the child plays the simple melody). We haven't tried it yet so I'm not sure if my son could handle it. But it seems fun and he is excited to try it.

This is a very decent piano method. I used it to teach my daughter and I think that she maintained interest a lot longer than she would have without this method. 5 stars!
