It simply doesn't work
As I switch the dial higher the indicator goes up and the pen starts beeping, all without the needle touching anything.

Needs a very good battery
This machine will not give a correct reading unless it has a fully charge battery, preferably a disposable lithium one. Even then it is not very sensitive and needs to warm up fully and at least four bars lit on the display before using.

This does actually work - just make sure you calibrate as per to gem size and room temperature
This is actually really good - I have a mixture of items some I know as diamonds others I know are simulants or paste and a few I wasn't sure about this little tool gets it spot on! The important thing to do is make sure you calibrate it as per the instructions. One reviewer posted a video showing them moving the dial to force the gadget to bleep and then states it doesn't work! RTFM - as they say ... I highly recommend this product - reasonable price and if you google this particular model its used and relied upon a lot.
