Your Heart Is The Sea

I wish I had acces to these words almost thirty years ago, when my anxiety disorder and depression, broke through. Oh, how I adore this book, and I only have read fifteen pages of it yet. This poetry offers so much recognition (also to learn from again); so much comfort, cover: pure balm for the heart and soul. How these poems emphasize uniqueness and worthiness is in any case beyond my comprehension. Overwhelmingly beautiful.

I write lengthy reviews; this poetry collection doesn't need one. I expected it to be too deliberate, intended to target specific and painful memories that readers are searching for some small relief from and force upon them a strong message about moving forward and finding inner strength to keep going. It certainly provided the relief but it wasn't deliberate, it was honest, open to interpretation and perfectly on point. I couldn't write a decent review, a poignant sentence or an eye-catching opening line which would convey how well-suited this book was to me because I don't really understand exactly why Nikita Gill hits me so hard; I don't know what it is about her poetry which manages to put to paper exactly how I feel, but she does. So instead I'll write that it was exactly what I needed, that I was searching for some evidence that someone out there gets it, and that if you're a reader searching for that same relief then I hope you'll read it too.

Nikita turns real world situations into occasions to be celebrated or lessons to be learned. Emotions come to the surface as power not victim. I keep the book by my bed and read a bit every night. She inspires me to stay close to my heart to do my work in the world.
