If I wanted to use this as a temporary blanket in my home would it keep me warm?

Hi - I have used these for years in various applications - so here's my answer - of course you could use it for a temporary blanket indoors - but, as the other guy said - it is a little noisy - but the real issue is that it is WATERPROOF - meaning that as you sit (even outdoors) your clothes will accumulate sweat/moisture and you'll get a little damp - normal body moisture can not move through this blanket as through a textile (cotton/polyester/etc) one - these work by reflecting (and retaining) body heat.

Does each color variation serve any other purpose aside from insulation? or they simply for preference?

Great question rolling.stone! The silver side of the blanket helps to reuse body heat. The gold side actually deflects heat, and can help to prevent overheating or provide shade. The other colors such as army green, can be used provide coverage or shelter, without being super reflective and looking like a signal shelter. Other colors like red, pink and orange all have reflective attributes that can be used to make emergency signals and stand out, but also use the silver side to hold in heat. Some blankets (not Swiss Safe Brand) have a matte finish, which does not offer reflective signaling at all.

If I were to put it over a window, would it block out the light?

Mike, It would not block out the light 100%. All emergency blankets have some mild transparency.
