I am 55 years old and read this book when I was about 13 years old while sitting in the back seat of the family station wagon while travelling down the highway on a family summer vacation. It really brought back great memories. My 13 year old son has read it twice and he loves it. Now he wnts to spend more time in the outdoors. He also said he wanted a pet falcon but I had to explain to him that it is actually illegal to capture and own a falcon unless you have a license for it. He then changed his mind to wanting to camp out in the truck of a tree. I had to remind him that we live in Louisiana, and not the Catskill Mountains. LOL. Review: Great Book for Teaching Children Values. - This is a great book for children, teaching values such as self-reliance, independence, respect for nature, conservation, appreciation of what you have, and perspective. It’s child’s adventure-fiction about a young boy who lives in a hollow tree and learns about nature for a year. I read this book in grade school, when I was about 10. Looking back, the book was strongly influential in my life. This is probably good for ages 9-14. I have given this book as a gift to children many times.

10 yr old Outdoor Living boy approved
Came fast and new. Happy with the order itself. This book is 10 yr old boy friendly. My son who is not an avid reader enjoyed it so much reading it with a group of boys at school he wanted his own to read again. A book that can do that is worth it.

finally read it!!
i saw this book and hated it purely based on the horrible cover of the edition i had when i was a kid. i swore i’d never read it. but now, all these years later, i’ve finished it and i liked it. i felt it was a cross between those frontier stories Disney used to make and Transcendentalism for kids. the main character is even referred to as Thoreau. it’s not an exact comparison, but several themes are there. besides this, it was a fun story. like the boy version of the girl getting ready with woodland creatures helping her. the boy however has a weasel, a raccoon, and of course a falcon, besides a handful of other forest animals. this wasn’t at all what i’d imagined it to be. i liked this book.

amazing read!
I loved the honesty of the writing. Sam was definitely the kind of character I root for. I’m eager to read what happens next.

Classic reading that always leaves me wishing for Sam’s adventure
I’m 61 and just finished what is probably my fifth or sixth read of this wonderful book. I love everything about it! The small sketches on some of the pages are so special and feel like Sam did them himself. This reading moved me to reread all of Jean Craighead George’s books and Scott O’Dell’s too. I can’t wait!

D’habitude je n’aime pas lire, mais j’ai beaucoup apprécié ce livre. Il n’y a pas beaucoup d’action mais c’est très captivant.

This was one of my favourite books as a kid, and reading through it again was a delightful experience. My partner read it after me, and now the kids are having a turn. Truly a classic.
