Wes Craven (The People Under the Stairs, Shocker) directs this terrifying story of one man's nightmarish journey into the eerie and deadly world of voodoo. A Harvard anthropologist (Bill Pullman) is sent to Haiti to retrieve a strange powder that is said to have the power to bring human beings back from the dead. In his quest to find the miracle drug, the cynical scientist enters the rarely seen netherworld of walking zombies, blood rites and ancient curses. Based on the true life experiences of Wade Davis and filmed on location in Haiti, it's a frightening excursion into black magic and the supernatural.Bonus Content: Theatrical Trailer Recommendations Review: Wes Craven, Haiti and Zombies! Save Bill Pullman from the Man with the Hex
Good God this movie traumatized me when I was young. I remembered channel surfing one day and I got to one of those Starz channels. What did I see...Bill Pullman getting buried alive, a man violently choking to death and a scorpion crawling out of his mouth, and that same man tearing his own head off and throwing it at Mr. Pullman. What the hell? That was some of the scariest things I've ever seen. Some time later I tried watching the whole movie from the beginning and it still scared the hell out of me. Now, after years of blocking it from my mind, I decided to watch it again out of curiosity and to finally conquer my fears. And well...its pretty disturbing and scary, but not so much as I remembered. This is probably one of Wes Craven's most underrated but definitely one of his most ambitious movies of his career, since from what I read some of the movie was shot in Haiti ( you know since its where the story was set in) but had to be finished shooting in the Dominican Republic due to political strife that was going on at the time making it too dangerous to continue. The set designs and locations are very impressive and help build a tense and creepy atmosphere. The acting was really good, although some of the accents made it hard for me to understand what people were saying from time to time. Maybe I should've turned on the subtitles, but I've said before that reading subtitles distracts me from what's going on. Aside from Bill Pullman, I was surprised to see Alfred from the Burton/Schumacher Batman movies and the maid from Billy Madison in this movie, which knowing this helped me power through. The effects ranged from pretty good, with the puppeteering for the short corpse woman being one the best, to pretty mediocre. I felt really bad for Bill Pullman, not his character but Bill Pullman himself for having to go through a lot of physical stuff like falling down a hill, being strapped naked onto a torture chair, having to be in close contact with very dangerous animals, and being in a lot of closed spaces...that would've been a total nightmare for me. And while the whole movie had been very consistent with its tone, the finale kind of felt rushed and goofy compared to the tense psychological horror that was predominant throughout and sort of devolved into something that would've happened in an Elm Street movie, but it did have a satisfying conclusion to it in my opinion. Also the main musical score playing during the love scene felt really out of place, I don't think two people having sex is supposed to be a creepy jungle adventure. Overall this movie is an underrated horror gem and continued proof that Wes Craven was a master horror director. It scared me when I was young, but I was able to brave through it after so many years. Will I ever watch it again? Maybe...in a couple more years.

Learned a lot
I'm an ER who loves reading non fiction about almost anything. I didn't know much about voodoo until I went to New Orleans last year. They recommended this book in the voodoo museum. Not going to lie, it's a wild story of superstition and scientific discovery rolled into one. Modern medicine has learned a lot from so called "primitives" and I can honestly say they have much to teach us

Serpent and the Rainbow
This film takes a deep dive in Haiti's Voodoo culture and practices. Based on a true story, it is sure to keep you up at night.

Great to see this film again after so many years. Except for some cheesy scenes and effects during the last ten minutes, this movie holds up really well. This restored version is mostly clean – there are some minor glitches throughout, but nothing that will affect your enjoyment of the film. For me, the real joy of watching this again was to see the beautiful scenes of the vodoun religion of Haiti. The extras and commentary are a little on the light side, but they do provide some interesting facts on the making of the film. For example, I wasn't aware of how much Wade Davis was involved in the production, specifically with connecting the filmmakers with some of his contacts in Haiti for the dancing and ceremonial scenes, and how the pilgrimage sequence was recreated with thousands of extras. The cinematographer also provides some insight, and Bill Pullman recorded an audio track of his recollections that unfortunately doesn't last for the duration of the movie. It would've been nice, of course, to have Wes Craven's input, but the cast and crew assembled for this release do a fine job of relating some facts about how this film was made, and how the studio interfered with the director's original vision and insisted that more horror elements be added to the final cut. After watching "The Serpent & The Rainbow" again after all these years, I still thoroughly enjoyed myself. But I can't help but wonder what the film would've been like had Wes Craven's vision been unaltered. It still would've differed greatly from the book, but I guess we'll never know for sure (there are no deleted scenes to suggest what could've been). In the end, this isn't as comprehensive as some of Shout! Factory's other bluray releases, but I'm still incredibly happy to add "The Serpent & The Rainbow" to my collection.

...unbedingt mal reinschauen, richtig gut gemacht.
