I am competent because I was trained in electricity and electronics for a living. You must have an electricity detector that gives a warning if there is electricity live in the circuit you are about to work on. They are reasonably cheap to buy and so you can make sure there is definitely no power present before you start work. I would not undertake this work if I had not been trained. I suggest you employ an electrician to fit this for safety if you are not competent.
