desertcart.com The audience for this rickety spoof is probably limited to three groups: diehard fans of Elvira, cultists of '60s horror (specifically the Edgar Allan Poe and Hammer offerings), and people who believe rim-shot, borscht belt humor ought to be brought back. The last group apparently includes Cassandra Peterson, the comedian who dreamed up Elvira; her fondness for vaudeville one-liners is either groan-worthy or infectious, depending on your tolerance for such things. Sample: "The village people say this castle is evil." "Ah, who listens to the Village People any more?" Ouch. Her Mae-West-meets-Vampira shtick wears surprisingly well at feature length (1988's Elvira, Mistress of the Dark is actually a pretty good time), although this movie simply runs out of material halfway through. Bonus: Rocky Horror genius Richard O'Brien contributes some amusing ravings as a mysterious Carpathian castle owner, pining away for a dead wife who suspiciously resembles our heroine. --Robert Horton Review: Elvira's 2nd Feature Film - In the 19th century, a woman visits a castle inhabited by a fatally cursed family. When it comes to “Elvira’s Haunted Hills”, there’s much more than first meets the eye. If watched casually, Haunted Hills may be written off as forgettable, but Haunted Hills is so much more and deserves your time if you are a classic 1960’s horror fan. Haunted Hills is best watched after watching the Extra on the disc “The Making of Haunted Hills”. If you are a fan of 1960’s horror classics such as “House of Usher”, “Pit and the Pendulum”, and the Hammer Studio Horror films, you will have a greater appreciation for this film. Cassandra Peterson (Elvira) mortgaged her home to make this film. It was that important to her. After watching the documentary (making of), you will have a newfound appreciation for how much work and dedication went into this film. Elvira’s Haunted Hills deserves to be watched and rewatched and hopefully it will inspire viewers to check out the 1960’s horror classics it honors. If you have already seen her first movie, “Elvira Mistress of the Dark”, before watching Haunted Hills, you need to know 2 things. 1. “Haunted Hills” is a very different movie with a much lower budget. 2. Haunted Hills story line is more involved with a slightly darker tone. It is funny but is very different than her 1st film. So, I encourage you to watch it with fresh expectations and not as a sequel to the first film which it’s not. Haunted Hills takes place (filmed on location) in Carpathia, Romania, in the year 1851. As a huge bonus we get Richard O’Brian (Riff Raff / Rocky Horror Picture Show). O’Brian adds so much to the film. After seeing his performance you can’t imagine him not being part of it. The colors, the weather, the light, the smells. It's all comforting. It's like a calm before winter and after the hustle of summer has faded. It's back to school. It's piles of leaves. It's harvest season. And of course its Halloween, a time of year full of nostalgia. There are so many things linked to the nostalgia of Halloween for me personally. Whether it be spooky movies or remembering Trick or Treating in the old neighborhood Halloween is as Fantastical as Christmas, obviously in very different ways. As far back as I can recall Cassandra Peterson's midnight movie hostess alter ego, Elvira, who I've enjoyed watching on television, video and on the big screen has been a staple of this time of year. Thus I've been a fan of Elvira since the early days of her rise to a pop culture Icon. Although I do happen to enjoy Peterson's first foray into a feature film, Elvira: Mistress of the Dark, Elvira's Haunted Hills is a funnier and more clever movie overall. It may not get as much attention as its "big sister" but that's not because it isn't as good. In fact it works perfectly as a follow-up to Mistress of the Dark. The character of Elvira really comes into her own in this particular style and setting. Thus it is my favorite of the two Elvira movies. Haunted Hills is at it's heart a comedic homage to the Vincent Price and Roger Corman horror film interpretations of some of the more popular Edgar Allen Poe stories. It steers clear from being an all out parody of these cult classics but pays tribute to them throughout the film which lends to Haunted Hills status as a cult classic itself. If you are a fan of the Price/Corman Poe movies Haunted Hills will be 100 times more enjoyable but it still works even without having knowledge of those films. I have often thought that Elvira's Haunted Hills would be the perfect cap to a Corman/Price/Poe movie marathon. Cassandra Peterson who co-wrote the script to Elvira's Haunted Hills is a friend and fan of the legendary Vincent Price. In fact, the film is dedicated to Price, a versatile actor who did both comedy and horror with ease, sometimes in the same movie i.e. A Comedy of Terrors. It's no wonder he would be an inspiration for Cassandra's Elvira. Peterson knows well how to write for her character evident in the many laugh out loud moments for Elvira in Haunted Hills. Her one liners are definitely more effective in this setting and hit consistently through the movie. Comedy is subjective but there are a multitude of comedic styles intermingling that showcases Peterson's talents. From slapstick to burlesque, there is a lot going on which means most viewers won't be bored. However, that being said, I'm not sure how well this film translates to someone who can't enjoy campier comedy styles. The movie is about having fun and letting Elvira's humor and talent shine and due to the film's inspiration and setting it succeeds in delivering that vibe. It is also great to have such unabashedly absurd and over-the-top performances from Elvira's co-stars who commit completely to the wackiness including another wonderfully weird role for the always awesome Richard O'Brien. O'Brien has a collection of memorable characters under his belt and his Lord Hellsubus is equally outrageous to most of them. The movie is simply a good time and truly a cult classic worth owning. Cassandra Peterson may be nearing an end to her run as Elvira but she has left a legacy that is intertwined with October and Halloween perhaps forever. Elvira's Haunted Hills is a real gem in that legacy that certainly deserves more recognition.

An enjoyable romp!
Elvira, humorous, sexy, eery. What else do you want??

Like most sequels and/or spin-offs...
Not much build-up, plot-wise, compared to the first one. And it would do with some decent subtitles and higher volume. But all in all, it is still watchable. Besides, Elvira is living a B-to-F-level horror medley once again. Only somehow in the farther past, instead of the future--at/near the close of the 20th Century--which brings up another thing that could have been done differently: the temporal setting. Otherwise, you watch and decide. Rave or Grave? Or a clean shave?

Hilarious romp with the Mistress of the Dark!
This film is not a sequel to Elvira: Mistress of the Dark. However, with the writing in sync with Cassandra Peterson's over-the-top (heavy) performance, you're sure to have a great time. With a restoration from a 4K scan of the original camera negative, this film really cleaned up very well from the original VHS cassette tape I've owned for almost 20 years! It comes with a deluxe hard board slip cover to protect the Blu-ray case. The cover is a new image but the original image is on the reverse side of the cover on the case. There is no DVD combo, nor a digital code for this film, but the special features are plentiful, including: an introduction by yours cruelly Elvira!, an audio commentary (with all of the essential performers and including the director), a making-of featurette, "Transylvania or bust" featurette, an interview with actor Richard O'Brien (of Rocky Horror Picture Show game), outtakes and a photo gallery. Shout Factory did a great job with this film! Kudos.

Encuentro que Cassandra Peterson está un poco mayor para representar a una extravagante artista de "burlesque". Y el guión flojea a cada escena.
