![Bottle Rocket [DVD]](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/31t96M0bj8L.jpg)

Product Description Newcomer Owen Wilson, in a star-making performance, co-wrote the screenplay about three best friends who attempt to escape their suburban boredom through a life of crime. But these bickering, bumbling thieves are no match for the local "godfather" (James Caan) who leads them into the biggest heist of their careers. Co-starring Luke Wilson and Bob Musgrave in their film debuts. .co.uk Review Bottle Rocket is a quietly daffy comedy that should have been an indie hit, but ended up being ignored by audiences. Too bad; it's a wonderfully sustained caper movie about friends whose career choice is all wrong. Low-key Anthony (Luke Wilson) and high-strung Dignan (Owen C Wilson--the two actors are brothers) are brought into a life of crime by Dignan's ambition to be a small-time thief. After a few amusingly laid-back trial burglaries, they (and a third buddy) find themselves over their heads when they hook up with an experienced crime boss (James Caan). Because this movie is so relentlessly deadpan, you really have to be dialled in to its brand of humour--but you're once there, Bottle Rocket shoots off plenty of sparks. Above all, Owen Wilson's portrayal of Dignan is a terrifically original comic creation; Dignan is so sincerely focused on his goals that he can't see how completely absurd his ideas are. Owen Wilson, who has since made something of a trademark out of similarly knuckle-headed performances in everything from Armageddon to Starsky & Hutch, wrote the screenplay with director Wes Anderson. --Robert Horton

a must see!
Bottle Rocket is the breakout film for writer/ director Wes Anderson, Owen Wilson, (who also co-wrote it) and his brother Luke.Anderson and Wilson's script is absolutely fantastic. It was fleshed out from a short sketch in black and white years earlier, and the amount of love and care that has gone into it over the years is plain to see.Anderson's direction shows the promise he would later fulfill, despite this film lacking the sort of budget which he would use to such great effect later, particularly in the Life Aquatic. Anderson still manages to pack this film with loads of subtle details, however, for example Wilson's notebook with his 75 year plan for their life of crime. He flicks through it so fast that its impossible to read in real time, but i would actually recommend pausing it on each page as it is absolutely hilarious! And the acting, mainly by the Wilson brothers, is very warm and affecting. You can't help but be taken by them and their next crazy scheme. James Caan is also enjoyable in his extended cameo towards the end. This is a side-splittingly funny film, with some of my favourite quotes in any film ever (Owen Wilson describing his latest scheme - "Here are just a few of the key ingredients - dynamite, pole vaulting, laughing gas, choppers, can you see how incredible this is gonna be...hang gliding... Come on!")Enough said, Just watch It!

An enjoyable evening well spent!
I bought this because we have absolutely loved all of Wes Anderson's films and so I'd been looking to see what else he'd done. It's not quite the masterpiece of some of the later films, but still really enjoyable to watch. You can see the contributors are just starting out and some of the ideas they're playing around with in this film turn up in other ones later. Some very funny moments, a mad script and an enjoyable evening well spent!

Loved it
One of my favourite Wes Anderson films; showing the beginnings of his particular aesthetic which he is now so famous for. Fans of the Wilson brothers this is a great one to watch. Especially if you are more into the comical/artsy type film.

Classic caper movie, with a typical Wes Anderson script.
Very funny caper movie. Script is classic Wes Anderson, just not quite the scale we're used to, as you would expect with this being his 1st film.Fans of his other works will find plenty to enjoy in this film. Owen Wilson dominates the show, but the random ensemble for his robbery crew are fantastic. Also nice to see Jimmy Caan cameo in this type of film.Well worth a fiver.

A taste (if a small fleeting one) of things to come
To start on a positive note: Wes Anderson is one of my absolute favourite directors & has created some fantastically whimsical films in the past 20 years. This was his first feature but the last one of his that I have seen to date. Admittedly, it shows elements of what has made him such an unusual but identifiable director, however, on the whole there just isn't enough to keep it interesting throughout. The thin plot lurches around before grinding to a halt. Often the expression 'one for the purists' is used when you don't know how to speak positively about a film/book/record. I consider myself a fan (loving all his films with the possible exception of The Grand Budapest Hotel) but this one just left me, if not exactly cold then no more than luke-warm. Not long after this he made Rushmore & his solid body of impressive work truly began, that is where I would recommend beginning your Wes Anderson journey. If this is your first of his films then don't be put off, he gets better, much better!
