Works Great in a Bucket!!
I had a few older North Face Hyvent shells to treat. I live here on the PNW coast of WA, so I need good performing rainwear as I trail run in the rain a few times a week. I had used the scotch guard spray in the past but still got so wet through in spots.....So this product.. I used a 5 gallon bucket with 2 gallons of water in it to make it really concentrated...poured in the entire bottle and stirred it up. I then put my two coats into the mix and made sure all was wet and covered. I let them sit for about an hour and then drained the excess water back into the bucket to reuse for two more coats. That bottle treated 4 items for me. They hung outside for about 2 hours to get rid of the dripping water, then a quick spin in the washer(no water just a spin cycle) to remove a little more water and then they went into the dryer on low for abut 30 minutes. I did not wat to over dry them in the dryer so then I took the slightly damp coats out and let them dry totally in my basement x1 day with a fan blowing on them. No smell from not doing a water rinse and they now shed water like they were new. Much easier than putting them in the washer I think. It takes a little effort and time but it was money well spent. btw I did not pre wash them with the Nikwax. They were pretty clean, no mud but a few dirty spots. I did not care if they looked brand new, just worked in the rain. These were used coats I got online for $30 each...used to be $$250 shells new...and they were 20 plus years old. I wear them 5 days a week when I am on a trail run with a pack. Final verdict is Nikwax is easier than scotch guard, better coverage, no smell, and works out to about $4 per coat....a pretty good deal.

Synthetic material? This will work.
I have used the Nikwax waterproofing treatment on a variety of different garments: Gore-Tex, nylon, kevlar: It will work on probably any type of outerwear that you want to waterproof. Obviously, the weave of the fabric has to be tight enough to be water resistant in the first place, it won’t turn your wooly fleece sweater into a raincoat. It will, however, add water beading qualities to garments not treated with a special coating by the manufacturer. Whether on my ski jacket and pants, textile motorcycle suit, gloves or raincoats. This stuff works really well and lasts for a long time. If you are finding your gore tex or other synthetic garments don’t bead water anymore, this will most likely return them to optimal function. Because this wash in treatment needs to completely binds to the fibers of your garment to achieve the best result, it is important to make sure the garment is as clean as possible and totally free of detergent residue before using the waterproofing. I always wash the item according to the directions on the tag then run through again with no detergent. Applying the treatment seems to be all about exposure of the fibers to the mixture. , I find that as long as you leave enough room for everything to float around fairly freely you can put more than the recommended number of garments per load. I do also allow plenty of soaking time. And whether it actually helps, I don’t know, but I also open the top while it’s agitating to make sure nothing is wrapped up tightly and loosen it if it is. After you use this treatment, there will likely be some very slippery residue inside your machine. If you don’t rinse the machine out, the next load of clothes will pick some of that stuff up. I recommend you try this before you replace a water resistant garment because it isn’t performing as well as when new. This potion, combined with a proper wash will probably get it working great again. I recommend this compared to any kind of spray on treatment, the results are simply better with this product.

I have a waterproof warm Goretex jacket I use for walking the dog in winter, and it had got filthy with mud as they do! The jacket was machine washable, so after a lot of advice from Auntie Google I machine-washed it and another waterproof jacket with a regular detergent to get them clean, then hand-rinsed them to get all the detergent out. I then put them through the machine twice with the Nikwax TX Direct (doubling up to compensate for using detergent to get it clean) and let them drip-dry. With some scepticism I tested waterproof-ness (is that a word?) using the 'shower' setting on the garden hose. Both jackets are as waterproof as they were when new! So I'm delighted and will definitely use again.
