The voltage and current of AC circuits are constantly changing. When you measure them, you want the numbers that you can plug into Ohm's Law for power and other calculations. It involves a bit of calculus but to get a single number that would be an equivalent DC voltage or current, you take the average of the square at every point, divide it by the number of points, then take the square root. That is why it is called Root Mean Squared (RMS).If you take the simple average, you will get the wrong number. As long as the waveform doesn't change though, the average will be proportional to the RMS. Older meters take the simple average and are calibrated to give the right answer as long as the current is a simple sine wave. As long as the only loads are incandescent lights, simple motors and such, that is fine. Since that was all you would used to expect in a house, those meters were OK for interior electricians. Modern lights and electronics draw current that isn't a simple sine wave though, so everyone usually needs a true RMS meter.

When you clip the clamp round the wire it reads what amps are going through that cable?

YES and NO. Unless there is no current going through the wire then it won`t read anything. You must clamp only around a single wire not the whole cable. You only read the amps in each wire one at a time. Also the voltage effects the current so make sure you know what and how many wires may be carrying current. Such as 120 verses 240 volts etc.

Does this meter have “vibration” when testing power on a circuit?

Where is the item made, is it made in the in the U.S or China?

My tester is marked Made in Taiwan on the back. For quality, generally I find made-in-Taiwan to be better than made-in-China, but not as good as made-in-USA.

This is quite possibly the cheapest volt meter I've ever hand my hands on. I use the high end FLUKE variations at work for electronics maintenance. I used this for an electrical class. This is a CAT III device, it has add on tips for the leads which you'll find very annoying and probably throw them to the side shortly after using them once or twice. this has a non contact voltage detector built into it. The tip of the clamp is where it detects from. Has a continuity detector which works fine (can be used for diodes as long as they're not sensitive to voltage). amp clamp works fine. I usually hang it whn I'm testing. Consider it a third hand. Not much to say. It's a cheap multimeter that fits in your bag without taking up much room. What's not to like?

Great multimeter, large clamp and easy to use

I'm an electrician and this tool does it all for most things. I chose this model because it has the clamp portion the same rating as the tester itself, 600A. Some have different amperage. The large clamp allows almost any wire size to be tested. My only complaint is that the case is s little small for the device. Other than that it's at a great price for what you get.

I've had this same meter for a long time. I loved it I wanted the same exact one and I found it on Amazon. Working great. Hopefully I'll get 15 years out of it like the other one

Clamp Meter - Ideal 61-744

Awesome amp probe. Its lightweight and perfect for checking water well amperage while the pump is running. The clamps are not as small as I would prefer but a small price to pay for the accuracy of the equipment. The bang for the buck is extreme. Shipping was super fast and efficient.
