More Candy from Kerouac
All of Jack Kerouac's books deliver the goods, in my opinion. It is intelligent, inspiring, amazing work that celebrates the world and all the people that inhabit it, but more than that, is just feels wonderful passing through your thoughts, like a window opened in your head to let the clear truth in. There is a love of things, acts, occupations, conversations, and comminglings saturating his books (especially On the Road) that is difficult to locate elsewhere, unless perhaps it is in Walt Whitman's poetry. This book is a loose collection of essays about a few of the author's experiences on ships, railroads, forests, and in cities like New York, New York, and Paris, France, all of which are described with an enviable enthusiasm -- and something else, something that could almost be described as a child's sense of wonder and innate, innocent state of body and mind. While Big Sur (another wonderful book) is steeped in sadness and madness, and books like Visions of Gerard are wet with painful nostalgia, this collection is wonderfully loving and optimistic (although the volume does end with a story concerning the inevitable death of the American hobo). Portions of it are best read aloud around a campfire or with close friends or lovers.

One of His Better Works
I've always liked Kerouac, and Lonesome Traveler is a dandy (though I really liked the way he wrote about Montana in Good Blondes and Others).
