Wow. Remo has set the quality standard for general/consumer percussion instruments in the U.S., and clearly they've now also set the standard for kid-safe instruments. This is not a toy; it's a beautifully-made, surprisingly resonant djembe. The only compromise is that it's not tuneable, which won't matter for almost any kid-application (if a kid is playing with other musicians who care about ensemble tuning, the kid's probably ready to graduate to a bigger drum anyway. :)) Very highly recommended.

We have a little drummer who drums every single day. He went through all the fisher-price and other "toy" drums very quickly because they couldn't handle the daily use. These drums are fabulous! They are real, colorful, perfectly sized, beautifully sounding drums. The mallets are perfect and great to have around the house with small children. We have drum circles with any friends or visitors that come over. We've even had junior high boys come over and drum with my three year old for over an hour. LOVE these!!

We got this percussion set for our 4-year-old, and he absolutely loves it. He’s currently obsessed with Bob Marley and spends time watching YouTube videos of people playing bongos—then follows along with this set. It’s been such a joy to watch him explore rhythm and music on his own. The quality is excellent, and the size is perfect for small hands. It feels sturdy and well-made, especially for a young child who uses it often. The only small downside is that the screw connecting the percussion pieces can loosen from time to time, but it’s very easy to tighten and hasn’t been a big issue for us. Overall, this has been a fantastic, engaging instrument for a young music lover. Highly recommend for kids who love music and rhythm.

This drum is no crappy kids' drum. In my opinion, it shines in two major areas: Durability and Sound Disclaimer: The manufacturer recommends this drum for 5+ years olds. I'm just a bad grandparent. I bought the 16" gathering drum 6 months ago for my granddaughter's 1st birthday. I wanted something she would have fun with now and sturdy enough that maybe, just maybe, she would have years from now. I thought this drum had a chance and I was right. She climbs on it, sits on it, and so far after 6 months, no harm to her or the drum. But the most important thing about it (after her safety of course) is she actually PLAYS IT! They say in the description that it "produces a big, fun sound." Yep, that is correct but it's also what I would call a genuine drum tone with balanced resonance. Not a "boing boing" sound you get from plastic toy drums. This is an instrument that can produce music, not just make noise. Comes with two mallets with rubber ball tips. One of my granddaughter's is lost already. You might want to consider getting an extra pair.
