Heavy Duty Shelf - Easy to Put Together and Install
Solid rack shelf. While the shelf itself is of fixed length, the mounting brackets can be adjusted to proper depth. Which was pretty easy to do. 2 screws for each bracket (total 8 screws). Installing it in my rack was simple; probably took me an hour altogether. Though as you can see from my pics, I have full access from all sides. Might be more difficult to do in more enclosed racks. As you can see in the pics, I placed my tower server and other peripherals on the shelf. It's not flimsy, so I had no concerns if the shelf could support the weight or not.

Stupidly strong rack shelf - perfect IF you install it correctly
Writing this review after purchasing six of these over the years. I have a full size server rack that houses my home network and home theater gear. This is a very strong shelf. It's unlikely you'll ever put 175 pounds of stuff on this shelf unless you're using it for a non-standard purpose, such as storing bags of cement or bricks. I have two, 4U servers that are home-built, meaning they didn't come with rack rails. Though you can get generic rack rails, they never work correctly and are more trouble than they are worth. Those go on these shelves. I have a a Denon HT receiver/amp that weighs about 30 pounds. A regular, 2U rackmount shelf just bends and isn't safe. So that goes on one of these shelves too. There is a trick to installing these shelves in a rack and it helps big time if your rack has open sides like mine does. Only attach the front mounting ears to the shelf. You will need about 4U worth of space to slide the shelf into the rack with the front ears attached b/c the screws that hold the ears to the shelf stick out and won't clear the rack rails. You'll have to angle the shelf diagonally a little bit to slide it in. Loosely secure the front brackets to the rack rails. Loosely install the rear brackets on the shelf, leaving them loose enough to slide back and forth. Tighten the rear mounting ears to the rack rails. Tighten the rear brackets to the shelf. Now, tighten the front brackets. I recommend using a socket and socket wrench on the nut, while you hold the screw in place with a Philips screwdriver to tighten the brackets to the shelf. The brackets are what hold the shelf up. Tighten the snot out of the brackets and you'll never have a problem. The mounting ears are exactly 1U in height, meaning if you intend on mounting something directly underneath the shelf, you have to ensure the brackets don't sag downwards into the 1U space directly underneath it b/c it will interfere with whatever you're trying to slide into that space. Other than those quirks, these things are built like a tank. I've had 100 pound UPS's and servers that weighed almost that much on these shelves and they don't bend, break, creak or do anything but sit there and take it. Pre-pandemic these shelves were about 25% cheaper than they are now. But, everything has gone up in price. Welcome to the new reality, I guess. Highly recommend this rackmount shelf!

Easy to modify for 2-post rack
The product description doesn't make it clear that this shelf is designed for 4-post racks only. You have to download the PDF manual from StarTech's website to confirm this. I ordered this shelf anyway for a 2-post rack, figuring I could modify it easily for a 2-poster. I own a number of other StarTech products (rack hardware, server enclosures, etc.), and I've been very impressed with StarTech's quality. I was equally impressed with the quality of this shelf. It's well-designed, well-built, and very strong. The shelf surface is welded to a "frame" that can hold significant weight. And as I estimated, the shelf was very easy to modify for my 2-post rack. I only had to drill three holes per side -- six total -- to mount the four included rack "ears" to the shelf frame using the included nuts/bolts. (I used existing "slots" for the fourth hole for each side.) It took me a total of 30 minutes to measure, drill, and clean up. Note that the shelf also comes with eight 10-32 rack screws for mounting into a rack. 10-32 threading is the most common for audio/video racks, but 12-24 is the standard for IT and telecom racks. Therefore, I had to supply my own 12-24 rack screws -- not a big deal since most purchasers of this shelf will already have their own rack screws to match their racks.

Perfectly fine for what it is.
They're the same quality that you find in other startech products. Pretty well built, but in this case, I don't love the adjustment for depth nor the style of installation. The depth sliders are tightened on the outside of the shelf, which is fine for open racks but it means you can't reach them if you're installing in abutting racks or cages. It means you can't just leave it a bit loose, hang it, then tighten to depth. You have to measure, tighten (four nuts), then install. Not a big deal, but if you didn't take a tape measure... Also, one end or the other needs a peg or spring attachment for the rack. These really take two people to install as you have to hold both ends in place at once to install. It's possible, but awkward. I used two shelves and it was fine, but I wouldn't want to install 20.

This is an excellent shelf. As others advised
This is an excellent shelf. As others advised, the adjustable part is a bit misleading. The shelf is fixed at 27-1/2" deep with a standard 19" rack width and 1U height It is adjustable in that the mounting brackets can be slide up and down the sides so that it fits multiple rack depths. The caveat is having some part of the shelf protrude if your rack is less than 27-1/2" deep. If this will work for your requirements, then this is a good shelf. It is well ventilated, designed and made from heavy duty metal. It will support the weight it is advertised to support - 175 lb..

When you need a simple shelf...
I got these to hold our 1U network devices. The rails in our datacenter are really thin and bendy, and even a medium sized switch sags with just the single front brackets. So I installed these shelved under each pair of switch / firewall. Worked great. Installing these is pretty straightforward, you attach 4 corner supports on the rails, then slide the shelf in. There are 2 shorter rails, and 2 longer ones. So you have an option to have the shelf a bit recessed on either the front or back. The shelf itself is pretty light, but holds a ton of weight. We have two monster switches that weight about 40 lbs each, and will bend the rails without rear support. With these shelves, it not only helped with the sag, but made installing soooo much easier. No more trying to hold up a switch while you try to install screws with a shaky hand. You just set the switch on the shelf. Way easier. I'm going to use these with all our cabinets, even the ones with thicker rails, just because it makes installation faster and safer.

Great multi-purpose shelf for your server rack
This is a great shelf if your rack is deep enough to accommodate it. Once the screws are in place you may find that the bottom screws may bleed into the 'U' below. If you have the space this is certainly a little cheaper than buying rails for every server, especially if like me you are using the server in a non-production or educational environment. Once I am finished with the server or want to switch it out I don't have to worry about whether I need to buy a certain set of rails or I can put a tower server on this as well. Great multi-purpose shelf that can at least handle anything aside from perhaps the larger enterprise switches.
