Counter Assault Bear Keg Food Storage Container Yellow

Very sturdy, durable product. Easy to use screw fasteners. Bright yellow so easy to see and find if it was moved overnight. It is just the right size for my 80L winter pack but may be too big for smaller than 60L packs. I'm happy with it and recommend it!

Like all gear, there is the fight between weight, cost and efficacy. pick 2. If you can take the hit on weight this is the best can. I did a fairly comprehensive search and could not find a trail or park that didn’t accept this model. If there is an accepted list, it’s on the list. If there is a ‘NO’ list, it’s not on there. Even the carbon fiber models have anecdotes of failure but I couldn’t find a single one for this can. Everyone knows the stories of bag failure and the problems with BV on the at and elsewhere. As for size, there are two larger canisters both made by wild ideas. I have rented the expedition and it is a fantastic can. At 6 times the price it should be. The WI also isn’t specifically listed as approved on all the park lists. I imagine a ranger would be ok with it but I dont want that hassle. Price is right. Same cost as a bv 500 and a fraction of the wild ideas. It fit in my gossamer gear mariposa but was a little awkward. Fits fine in my osprey rook. Enough room for 4-5 days/two people if you pack it correctly. Last trip we (2) had 3.5 days and 1.5ltr of vodka in here no problem. So if you have money to burn, save a pound in your pack and get carbon fiber. For the rest of us this is the can.

We bought this Bear Keg and the black Bear Keg Universal Carrying Case to take backcountry backpacking in Rocky Mt National Park this fall. The top of the keg opens up with a coin or screwdriver, which was fairly easy to use for someone with opposable thumbs but seems like it would be impossible for a bear to open if he got ahold of it. We didn't encounter any bears on our overnight trek to Timber Lake, but the NPS staff required us to prove we had a bear canister in order to get the backcountry permit. (The NPS apparently rents them as well.) When we showed them, they were completely satisfied with our "Bear Keg" as it was on their list of approved canisters. About 2 miles up the trail, we encountered a park ranger coming back down and the first thing he asked was to see our bear container. So it's a good thing we had it. My husband carried the Bear Keg in his already full backpack with all the food and the campstove stowed inside the keg. The extra 4 pounds of the Bear Keg and carrying case resulted in a heavy pack for him, poor guy. In hindsight, I think I would prefer a smaller, lighter bear canister. This 11 Liters canister is a bit overkill for an overnight trip with 3 people. For a multiday trip we would have needed something this big though. At night we put the Bear Keg across the creek from our campground, about 75 yards away, where we could still see it (the bright yellow color helps) but we were far enough away in case it did attract a bear. So if you don't mind the weight and bulk, this thing seems bullet proof AND bear proof.

Sturdy and large enough for many days. I feel good about hiking in Yosemite with this canister, even among the "advanced bears."

This bear canister is totally worth bringing on the trail. It’s definitely on the bigger side, but that actually makes it perfect because everything fits in it with no problem. It’s sturdy, reliable, and gives great peace of mind. Plus, you can even use it as a stool at camp, which is a huge bonus. Highly recommend!

This thing is a tank! Good luck to any bear getting into this thing. The bright yellow makes it easier to find if one happens to roll it around. There is an optional carrying bag that some say is good for carrying outside of pack...I can’t imagine strapping this to the outside of a pack as it is heavy by itself let alone filled with food. We had it packed with food for 4 ppl for about 7 days and it was 14lbs. My husband fit it inside his pack no problem. Strapping it to the outside as some have suggested would be such a strain on your shoulders bc the weight would be too far from the middle of your back. Anyway it’s a quality canister if you are in bear country!

Used this for a 5 day motorcycle camping trip in the mountains of Georgia. There was enough room to store my food and travel smell good items (soap, deodorant, shaving cream, sunscreen, toothpaste, etc). It’s very durable and easy to open with a coin or pocket knife. The outer shell is very durable. It stored in its optional case very well, and I was able to carry it in the side case on my Concours 14 along with an REI camp chair. I chose the yellow so it would be visible in the woods when I went to look for it later. I only placed it in the ground a distance from camp on two of the days. The other 3 days I hung it from a tree in its case along with my buddy’s food bag. It wasn’t near tested on this trip, but I did find fresh bear tracks about 50 yards from its location.

I am hiking the Bruce Trail next year. Part of it is bear country, but the whole thing has raccoons. As a test I rolled it down the cement stairs in my apartment building. Didn't crack, and the lid stayed in place.

Food Keg is very solid. It is 3.9lbs and when backpacking every pound counts. I would recommend this product, knowing that it will take up space in pack and the weight.
