Interesting Read
This was an interesting read for my students that captured their attention and held it to the end. The illustrations were beautiful and helped engage the students as well.

Great for my three year old and two year old.
This book is haunting and inspiring. I have a three year old and a two year old, and they both find this book fascinating. It opens up new worlds with all of the details to the illustrations. The text to picture ratios are great for keeping a kid engaged. The art work is beautiful.

Love this book!
Love this book. I have begun to collect all of Shaun Tan's books. I noticed in some of the reviews of other Shaun Tan's books that they weren't for children. If you are familiar with Shaun Tan, then you will know that some of his books aren't meant for little children. This book is most likely meant for a child 6 yrs & older. The words are darling and the illustrations are outstanding.

Beautiful and uncomfortable, even disturbing
The story is for older children-- I'd say at least 8 or older, maybe even middle school. It is mysterious and will take some pondering. For art, I would give it 500 stars. But be forewarned: it's a bit creepy and dark, and definitely not for small children. I found it beautiful and rather distressing. Could be a great introduction to bullying in the middle school grades.

a new Shaun Tan classic
What can I say? Once again, Shaun Tan brings his unique, surreal, slightly spooky, but totally beguiling world to a picture book. Rules of Summer include important rules to survive fantastical adventures, such as "Never leave the back door open overnight" and "Always bring bolt cutters" and "Always Know your Way Home." A perfect gift for a child about to experience a long and eventful summer.

I love this book. Every Shan Tan book has a different style and feel and this one is just so imaginative. Somehow reminds me a bit of seeing Labyrinth for the first time as a kid.

A beautifully illustrated book, my sons absolute favourite. We found this book in the library earlier in the year and my 6 year son loved it so much he asked for it for Christmas. He proceeded to read it to all the family on Christmas Day, describing the pictures and scenes with lots of interpretive detail. Minimal text and easy to read - and seems to strike a chord with children. Quite darkly illustrated in places, bird-like creatures watching the last olive being eaten etc but he absolutely loves it and seems to see so much in the pictures that as an adult I wouldn’t even notice. He is not in the slightest phased by the illustrations, indeed he likes what I’d consider the more dark pictures the best, especially the slippers of the furry semi-cute creature who crept in while the front door was unlocked. His favourite book that he goes back to again and again. The pictures fire off his imagination in a vivid way (just why is hare watching the red sock from behind the fence?) and it is a joy watching him interpret the pictures and construct a world from the brushstrokes. Artwork is gorgeous too. Highly recommended, if I could give six or more stars I would. A future classic.
