I started out with the beavercraft kit since it came with 3 knives and the bag. I ended up buying this flexcut detail knife after a couple months. It's definitely my favorite knife and worth the money, I'd still recommend the beavercraft kit if you're just starting out so you can learn how to strop, whittle, etc on those instead of a nicer knife like this one. Feels good in the hand and sharp right out of the box. Whittling feels super smooth with this :)

I know that several "pro" whittlers use this knife, but I'm just staying out in the hobby. But I decided to give it a shot and it really is a GREAT knife. Actually, as a beginner this is what you should start with so you don't get frustrated with a inferior knife that could injure you.

I’ve been using flex cut knives now for about three years, as well as several sets in varying sizes, of their palm gouges. I’ve also purchased their sharpening strap for gouges. I found their products to be durable, and very sharp right from the factory. They don’t really need sharpening out of the packaging, and all you really need to do is strap them on occasion and they will last a good long time, with a nice sharp edge.. On this particular occasion, I did purchase this knife to replace one that I had, because tiff snapped off. The tip snapped off while I was making a plunge cut, to remove a small chip around the nose of a carving I was making. This is a cut that I’ve done hundreds of times with a very same knife, which I can tell you from experience does not require a lot of pressure from one side to the other. I think it was just an unfortunate incident and it’s not typical of the flex cut knives. Speaking specifically to the flex, cut knife, I find the handle very comfortable, as well as the size and length of the handle. I will say I would prefer the handle to be just a little bit bigger in girth, but I wrapped them anyway with a flex tape so that I can hold the knife safer and more secure when I’m using a glove.
