I relied on my plastic architectural scale for three years in high school, and it served its purpose. Toward the end, however, the dents, dings, and scratches made it a less than precise tool. This time around, I wanted a scale that could survive drops off my workbench, but more importantly, give me easier to read markings that won't wear off. This aluminum rule fits the bill. It is heavy enough to stay put on your drawing board, and the edges are crisp enough to make accurate measurements without being dangerously sharp. I compared the graduations to a known precise rule, and they were dead on accurate. I believe this scale will last many years.
