SUUNTO A-30 Compass: Compact, hiking compass with luminous markings in low light

Finnish made quality, accuracy, and durabilty.

The compass was purchased as a gift, for someone who wants to get into 'land nav'. The compass is a no frills navigation device but it's a Suunto and should last a very long time. the product is as described and I'm happy with my purchase.

This was a gift for my wife, who went on a tour of Northern Scotland, where she wanted to measure the directions faced by several portions of the Cairns of Clava, a Bronze Age burial site. The compass was delivered on time, the day before she left. She reports that it functioned well, and she was able to obtain the measurements that she wanted. When I examined the compass before she left, it seemed to function well, and to be straightforward to use.

Suunto Oy is a Finnish company that manufactures and compasses and precision instruments. Headquartered in Vantaa, Finland. Considered by some to be the best compasses makers. In my opinion only Siva and Suunto make reliable compasses. There are a few companies that make compasses for the military but expect to pay a lot more. In the back woods away from civilization a reliable compass is a must. Trusting a compass bearing may make a difference in getting back to your Tent. Being Lost is no fun.

Better quality than a silva, I don't need less than 5 degree accuracy so this exceeds my needs. For twenty dollars and the warranty, the price is fair. The needle could be better quality but it's fair for the price. I would buy this again and recommend it to my peers. The only thing I dislike has to do with feel and aesthetics regarding the belt upward plastic for the lanyard. Warning: Keep away from your knives, multi-tools, etc.. The needle is pulled toward these items when within 8 inches.

I got the Suunto A-30. Points north. Rotating declination scale won't accidentally move off where you've placed it. North needle AND bezel ring glow in dark. I believe it's the kind of material that absorbs light and then 'glows' if the light is turned off. If you intend to use this in pitch dark I don't think it'll glow like a tritium (mildly radioactive substance that glows due to the substance decaying) watch dial. For those of you counting ounces, it weighs in at 1.04 ozs on the home postage scale. I like the magnifier in the center. I can leave my reading glasses at home and use the magnifier in the event I have to read something up close.

Exactly what I ordered. This is a great compass for beginners. It comes with an instruction manual and a lanyard. I still recommend that you do some research on how to use a compass and map beecause there is something called declination. Declination is the angle difference between north on your compass and north on a map. You have to adjust for this when you want go from point A to point B using a map. This compass makes it easy to adjust for the declination/angle difference. Note: Some compasses let you set the declination once so you don't have to keep adjusting it. This compass does not have that feature. However, its still an amazing compass. To know the declination of the area you'll be traveling in simply type it into google. For example, type in " What is the declination of Yosemite". If it says +13.00 degrees turn your compass counterclockwise 13.00 degrees. If it says -13.00 degrees turn your compass clockwise 13.00 degrees. To adjust for the 13.00 degrees use the red markings on the inside of the compass. Do not use the outside black degree markings.

Used this at an Orienteering meet and worked great. The dial was easy to move one-handed and the magnifying glass was handy in determining proper distance to the next control.
