Seymour Mfg. AU-S6 Post Hole Auger : desertcart.in: Garden & Outdoors Review: One the best tools I ever purchased. We redid a fence and dug about 30 holes with the Auger. Each hole went down to about 3.8-3.9 feet...right until the handle touches the ground, therefor almost right on the 4foot mark(frost line). The diameter of the holes was perfect for a 10 foot 4x4 post and that left enough room for 1.5 to max 2 bags of Concrete(30Kg each). The auger is high quality and it makes digging a breeze, plus the price vs the rent of a gas power auger is perfect. The only thing you need to take care of are: roots, rocks, bricks and old concrete that we found when we were digging...but as long as you have a crowbar(to get the rocks, bricks out) and a saw to cut the roots...you won't be stopped by any type of soil. Best investment ever, plus a very good workout. Review: An amazing tool. I am 59 years old and walk with a quad cane or walker due to a bad left leg. I dug a perfect 18-inch deep hole in about five minutes and that's because I was going slowly and cautiously. No mess at all. I had a plastic bag next to the hole, the auger held the dirt securely as I pulled it up, and I just shook it out into bag. One thing: It comes with a nice 21-inch wood handle that fits nice and tight. However, I needed to dig the hole within five inches of the fence. So I got a slightly thinner wood dowel from Home Depot (1-11/16 in. dia.) of the same length that I could pull through, and shorten either side as I came up against the fence when turning it, and used that as the handle. Worked great. Seriously, folks. If you need to dig a post hole, or a well for that matter, this is the tool for you. Don't waste your time with, and your money, on a pick, spade and clamshell.

Let me start by saying I am a 56 year old, 5'4" woman and our property has a lot of clay and rocks. So far I have dug out 5 holes to 42 deep each. The first three were a breeze, this carves through clay like a hot knife through butter. The last two I hit some large roots. This thing will cut small roots, but not 1" or more in diameter. Using other tools to deal with large roots. One thing to note is that rather than installing the handle, I put it in part way so that I could easily remove it. I bought a 1 1/4" x 36" hardwood dowel from Lowes and used it when I needed more leverage to dislodge rocks or cut small roots. It worked great. I highly recommend auger, it seems very well made and does its job.

Great product. Did exactly what I hoped it would do. And thicker metal than I expected so it will last a long time.

My hard-packed clay in Northern Illinois must be a little harder than the clay of some other reviewers, because it took me longer to dig, but this is a sturdy product and was easier than my former method of using a clamshell-type digger. I bought a Maxccino auger bit (currently $8.98 on Amazon) and coupled it up to a heavy duty electric drill to drill a 2-inch pilot hole in the center of the bore and that speeded up the process considerably. Other reviewers have mentioned the inadequacy of the screw that goes into the handle. I just omitted the screw. The handle fits very tightly into the tool, and I knocked it out with a mallet when I was done using it, which makes it a lot easier to store.
