For the price very good, reliable item
UPDATE Nov. 18, 2016: I ordered another two-pack of these based on liking the two I already have so much, and wanting these in a couple other rooms or perhaps for travel. They're handy when you need a flashlight for something, and reliable when our power goes out typically a couple times a year during storms. In fact I'm raising my review to 5 stars, for the price vs. value received these are outstanding. I hadn't realized it was 4 YEARS since my original purchase and those two units still function well. I see the old ones are slightly less bright than the new ones when I compare the beam side-by-side. One minor difference in the new ones: there is no silver reflector behind the front 3 LEDs. It's just a white "reflector" same color as the rest of the device. This casts a softer more diffused light when I compare on a white ceiling, but it's a minimal difference. There is still a silver reflector behind the 2 front LEDs. The new lights arrived fully charged as with the two I'd purchased in 2012. Original review: These units are less expensive than a couple of the competing emergency lights, one reason I purchased 2 of them. I received (on 8/7/12) model #71134 (without "CC" at the end, which is what was advertised here and that other reviewers mention). I don't know what the difference is with the "CC", but mine do seem to work well and have good illumination (there are only 2 or 3 LEDs, keep in mind) in the dark. Both had a charge when I received them. Both come on at power failure (tested in a power strip) with either the front light or the flashlight function as selected. There is no "night light" except a red LED (on all the time when plugged in) which would be an aid in finding the device in the dark but provides virtually no light on its own (the selected main light comes on of course if the power goes off or if you unplug the device). I opened one device up (4 Phillips screws) to check the battery type and there are 3 "AAA" batteries enclosed in a green plastic-wrapped pack (stamped "Ni-MH AAA 200mAh 3.6V"), which is soldered to the device circuit board (unfortunately.) So it will be possible to replace the batteries if needed, but it'll probably require some light soldering (or maybe my favorite, heaving taping!) of the wires to the battery pack. I hate throwing things like this away just because the batteries stop working. The good news is, they are labeled as Ni-MH, not Ni-Cad batteries, which should perform better. For the low price, this is a simple and effective emergency light that will help me find the door or the lanterns and other gear in an emergency or power outage.

Best Emergency Light for the Price
We live in a neighborhood where the power is always going out. I ordered four different plug-in emergency lights to try out, and this one was by far the best. It was the least expensive (under $10) and produced the brightest light. The biggest plus is that the light shines straight out, so it illuminates the floor/area where you are actually walking. All the others either aimed their light at the ceiling (not helpful, I'm not walking on the ceiling) or their output is so weak it's little more than a nightlight. I dumped all the other plug-in lights into the Goodwill bag and am just using the Slimline ones. It has produced light for several hours in past power failures. Fortunately the power hasn't gone out yet for an extended period of time, so I don't know the outer limits of its longevity, but for the average power outage of a few minutes to several hours, you will be fine. I ordered the original one January 2013 and it's still working great when the power goes out. An added bonus is the flashlight feature at the top of the unit. It's not terribly powerful, but good enough to light the way to the LED camping lanterns in the garage. I ordered several more for current use and to stockpile. Last time I found an emergency light this good (Intermatic PR3C Three-in-One Emergency Power Failure Light) they discontinued them. Don't take the chance! Buy now!

Grandma-Approved Product: Tech she can use!
Picked a couple of these up for my grandma, after she was stuck in a power outage and couldn't find her flashlight. She doesn't like anything new, hates changes, throws away all kinds of (neato!) safety stuff we get for her...so I hid one of these lights behind the TV and stuck one in the extra socket in the kitchen, and switched them so they'd come on in an outage. I mentioned them to her but told her just to ignore them, they were out of the way and would work when she needed them. We had a small storm about a week later, and she called to tell me that when the power flicked off for a minute, the Power Failure lights came on right away and gave enough light she didn't even need a flashlight to navigate the house. Definitely did what I wanted them to do; not sure how long they'll last, but for less than 10 bucks each, I don't really care if I have to replace them often. Grandma is happy and feels safer being by herself in bad weather, so 5 stars. My mom turned around and ordered 30 for the elderly folks at her church. The light is bright, flashlight feature worked, and I got brownie points with g-ma AND mom--SCORE. The metal power prongs slide in and out from the back of the light, and can be hard to plug in because when you push the light toward the outlet, the prongs sometimes start to slip back inside the light. Again, no problem for me, but wanted others to know.

I was disappointed to find out that the nightlight only works when it's unplugged. This light does not work as a nightlight when plugged in! The only thing that glows when it it plugged in and turned on Is the red indicator light. This light did not meet my needs.
