Enterprise-grade control at home - brilliant router, steep learning curve
I’ve been running the MikroTik RB5009UG+S+IN for about 6 months as my main home router (DHCP, VLANs, firewalling), sitting behind a Virgin Media hub in modem mode. I’m also using a backup 4G modem via the USB port, and the unit is rack-mounted using the MikroTik rackmount ears. The feature set is exceptionally comprehensive — DHCP/DNS options, VLAN configuration and firewall capabilities are miles beyond typical consumer routers, and it’s been solid in day-to-day use. It’s also fanless, and temperatures have stayed well controlled (even installed in a loft rack). Only real “gotcha”: RouterOS has a steep learning curve. If you want plug-and-play, this isn’t it. If you want proper control and you’re happy to learn, it’s outstanding.

Excellent for small home offices that want a router that can fail over between WAN connections
This is a really good router. I'm not sure I'd recommended for Non-IT type people, but for those who know a bit of networking , and want a router that is very configurable and can do failover between multiple WAN connections in a small home office setting, this is really very good, especially for the money. But you will have to learn routeros, and some networking concepts. Have a chat to chatgpt about it.

Powerful router
I was having issues with my Hex POE and ipv6 speeds so bought the RB5009 as an upgrade. Very impressed , have thrown everything I can at it and it barely registers 10% cpu. The containers option is also handy for running pihole etc

Small but powerful router for experienced users
Mikrotik routers are designed for commercial uses & professional users but offer great power to the adventurous. My old cloud core router died and I needed something that can run 500Mbps broadband as well as all my firewall rules and this thing is brilliant. Doesn't even get warm. One downside is that being so small, it's not a great fit in a 19" rack so I'm using a shelf that carries the router and the Wi-Fi PoE adapters.

Amazing Performance
I purchased this router after not being able to hit 1.6gbps speeds with EE provided router. was actually hitting 940 Mbps, with a little touch of sfp+ copper module it supports 2x 2.5Gbps ports with this router I saw 2.2Gbps even higher speeds than the ISP advertised which should be between 1.3 - 1.8 G/bps provided via ee fiber. even hitting 2.2gbps has %15 - 20 CPU usage on the router. Definitely a to-go option if your ISP provides you with Gigabit+ connectivity.

A great upgrade from Ubiquiti Unifi
It's no secret that Unifi software has always been a weak point, but ever since Ubiquiti have dumbed down (more consumer oriented) the Interface and removed so many features, I have been looking for an alternative or an upgrade. So far, the MIKROTIK RB5009UG has been a solid upgrade. The interface may not look as pretty as Unifi, but it's got so much more functionality and horsepower. I'm now convinced Mikrotik is the future of my homelab and will be systematically replacing Unifi my gear going forward.

This is one of the most frustrating routers I have ever had the joy of setting up, I love it. I use mine as a complete bypass of my Bell homehub, beware its not an easy router to configure, I thought I knew what I was doing, I'm a senior software engineer with over 10 years experience and I struggled to get mine going. You really have to know what you are doing or have the patience to figure it out. Getting it working is both satisfying and rewarding, its a fantastic router and a must have for any homelab enthusiast.

Received well, would like interchangeable plug for the power supply. Microtik is a solid product.

Great router. It's configurable and you can pretty much do everything with it. Requires knowledge in networking and you need to configure aleverything by yourself.
