Wow, pretty nice knife
I own a lot of knives, have a few first production knives from Benchmade, and also some Zero Tolerence, Spyderco, Kershaw, etc., and I have to say this is a gem, especially in D2, which is a pretty good upgrade over AUS8. A little oil, and this baby flicks really nicely. For me, this is a thumb stud flick of the wrist knife, which when done together gives a very fast deployment and a loud locking sound as it locks into place. Very sweet. The blade is large because of the 1/2 space between the handle and were the blade actually begins. Knife came with a well centered blade, and a pretty good sharpness. I worry a lot when I take my $200 knives out in the field to hunt or field raft, but not with this one. Crazy good price for a D2 blade, thick enough to handle what you want with a folding field knife, but still able to make a good fire stick. Perfect compliment to my heavy fixed blade Esee 5. Made in Taiwan, not to get mixed up with the communist totalitarian state of the mainland China. Tiawan makes good stuff, much better than the other China (communist). Get this knife, it’s so much knife for the money.

OKC not RAT
For the price this is hard to beat. Closed, the blade is centered properly into the handle. Very easy to flick the blade open. Once opened it locks in place well with little side to side play. Decently sharp, but I’ll have to touch it up a little. Plastic scales aren’t slippery but don’t have great traction either. Handle is long enough and very well designed to allow a solid grip regardless. Love the 4 position pocket clip, and wish that was more common. I like to carry tip down and it came setup like that out of the box. Landyard hole is positioned properly, no chance of the closed blade contacting any cordage run through there. Only “negative” is that the blade doesn’t have the RAT logo like in the picture, just the Ontario logo, but that’s of course nit picking. Will see how it holds up and custom micarta scales are likely in order, but looks like a very good budget option.

What a pocket knife should be
The knife is excellent Quality. The one I received from Wisemen Trading is a RAT edition, not just Ontario knives and feels appropriately heavy and ergonomic. It has no side to side play, and the liner lock feels very sturdy. It was very easy to change the pocket clip location since I prefer to carry my knives tip down. It has a very sharp edge out of the box, shaving sharp. I much prefer the larger size compared to the RAT 2. I wanted to get one before they're gone. If you're thinking about grabbing one, get it while you can and definitely before buying the new cheap Chinese flippers that are flooding the market.

King of budget EDC knives?
There are not many things to dislike about this knife. For $40, you get a dependable, reliable, sharp, well made knife with ambidextrous thumb studs and a pocket clip that you can put in 4 different positions. Did I mention this knife is made of D2 steel? D2! For $40! Honestly, this knife deploys super quick and smooth, and you can open and close this knife with one hand in 3 seconds, I'm sure other people can do it much quicker. For the price, this is a perfect knife that you can rely on to last you a very long time. If I had to change one thing about this knife, I wish I could choke up on the blade a bit more with my index finger, but I haven't run into any problems otherwise. HIGHLY recommend this knife for beginners, experts, and anybody in between. The RAT II is another great option that is just slightly smaller than the RAT I if you wanted something more compact.

A great value, and a pleasant upgrade over the AUS-8 version.
This is the third Ontario pocket knife I have acquired, the first being the RAT 1 in AUS-8 and its sibling the RAT 2 in AUS-8 as well. The lockup on the knife is absolutely solid, there is no side to side blade play, nor vertical due to the linerlock design. It flips open smoothly, and the technique I prefer is to overcome the detent tension at the same time as slightly flicking the wrist to give it enough momentum to open all the way in one fluid motion. The liner lock engages on the first 50% on the blade material, meaning as the knife wears in (if it wears in, the liner probably will before the D2 steel if anything does) the lock will have plenty of room to engage closer to the opposite liner, immediate benefit is that it does not lock too deeply as some production folders tend to do. Another benefit of the D2 variant over the base model in my case is that the detent while strong is not obnoxiously so. The AUS-8 version I received had such a stiff liner lock and strong detent that opening and then disengaging the liner to close the knife, using one hand, would slightly hurt your thumb, and shred the tip of your thumb with repeated use. As I know a lot of users love to flick open their knives and close them over and over this should be something to consider. The D2 blade was able to be made hair popping sharp in less than 10 minutes using a Fallkniven CC4 sharpening stone, taking some care to minimize then remove the burr at the end of sharpening was where most of the time was spent. Overall the D2 steel is a well received improvement over the base model, and in my case the fit and finish was better as well.

Good knife
This is my second Rat1. The other is in AUS 8 steel. This design is about ten years old and is still the best folder for the money. D2 is a good tool steel and will keep an edge longer than AUS 8. The handle design is quite comfortable. The only thing I don't like about it is the pocket clip. I just don't like pocket clips. For those if you that do, it can be moved to four different positions to accommodate both left and right handed users. The clip screws take a Torx 6 bit. This is a very good knife for the money. For those of you who might find this knife too large, there is a smaller version, the Rat2.
