Would you use this saw to trim hardwood plugs?

Both the ripping dude and the crosscut side have some set to the teeth, so it's not really a flush cut saw-- it'll scuff the surface you're cutting to if you ride up against it. Still a good saw, but not the 100% ideal for trimming plugs.

Is this a rip or crosscut saw? or is it both?

This saw has both. The coarse side is for ripping. With that said I find it much more difficult to use the 9 tooth/inch side for me. I just use the 17-tooth side just about all the time. If I had to buy again or replace this one I will get a single sided saw in the 15 to 17 tooth range.

Is this made in USA or Japan?

Am not certain of actual manufacturing location. I believe that corp. hq is in Carson, CA (from internet). Not much info is given about the 2440's mfg. location. It is quite possible that it is of Japanese design and is partially made in Japan and assembled in US, but I cannot verify that. I own one and am extremely pleased with its ease of use. It is extremely sharp so great care should be taken when using it. Just a nick will cause more damage than one would might expect. I only blinked once and got a nice little cut ... haven't done that again. I slowed down - a lot! Cuts luan panel like butter. Hope this helps.

Yes, as in pvc tubing or piping. It has two different sets of teeth, a finer set on one side and not so fine set on the other side. You might try the less fine side first. It is so sharp and handy. But remember it cuts on the pull stroke. I can imagine someone cutting their finger with it if not careful or not keeping the other hand away from the teeth.
