Even though I had been taking Niaspan via prescription from my cardiologist for 4 years, my Tricare/Express Scripts insurance stopped supporting it. After 6 months of futilely trying and failing to get any resolution and my cholesterol and triglycerides levels going through the roof, I started looking for alternatives and found Watson Time Release. I've been using it for 3 weeks now. The 1000 mg tablets are definitely big, but I got used to taking them after a few days. Since I had been out of Niaspan for 6 months, I went through the same initial side effects as when I first started taking Niaspan. I had slight flushing. The achy joints and muscles gradually faded after about 10 days, but I was miserable until the symptoms subsided. So far, I'm satisfied with Watson Niacin Time Release; I only gave 3 stars since I'm a tough grader. I will provide an update after I take my next blood test. I've also been eating oatmeal every morning, taking 1000 mg fish oil, taking flax hull lignans, eating 2 servings of fish per week (still trying to learn fish recipes that taste good), and reduced eating red meats. UPDATE 15 Jun 2015. Just got the results from the 13 Jun 2015 blood test. In only 2.5 months, my VLDL and triglycerides decreased 50%, and HDL increased from 36 to 47 mg/dL. So, I'm very satisfied, and upgraded my rating to 5 stars. And no prescription and insurance hassles! This is definitely part of my of my daily routine from now on.

I did not notice that this was time release when I ordered it but have been happy with the experiment using it. I had been following a niacin detox protocol as pre-workout, which requires experiencing the flush. Now, I am taking a break from the sauna and using it for the skin -sun supportive benefits. I have noticed that when I take this on an empty stomach I do not flush but if I eat with in an hour of taking it I will, so clearly stimulating digestion activates a more rapid release and causes a flush which is opposite of other niacin which typically causes a stronger flush when taken on an empty stomach.

I don't do well with statins;I've tried a few after having a heart attack at 34 (98% blockage). I take Zetia now with Niacin to control cholesterol and reduce plaque. I would not suggest this for people on statins because studies have shown that niacin delays the metabolism of statins causing a build-up in your blood that can cause overdose on the statins. I'm not a doctor, so please do your own research and talk with your doctor before mixing any drugs with OTC anything. I've tried regular niacin (flushing nicontinic acid) and this works well with the time release to reduce the flushing. I found that with the "hot" niacin, I built up a tolerance for higher doses over time but I don't take it daily unless I get off my regular diet (holidays etc). Sometimes, I will take an extra baby aspirin (81mg) with these to further reduce any minor flushing; taking this with a meal has worked better than the aspirin.

I experienced terrible flushing and itching. I avoid carbs, and taking with protein was no help. I finally figured out I could avoid most side effects if I took it with nuts. Will look for a true non-flushing brand.

being rather anti Statin drugs I take Niacin for bad cholesterol lowering. This brand is what my spouse calls a 'horse pill', but really not all that big in my mind. If Warmth in review above refers to the well known niacin burn or flush, these are coated and if taken with food, and no hot drink, there is almost never a flush or pins and needles 'burn'. Another way to take is right before bed & sometimes you are asleep before any tingle can start.
