hello, the kit is brackets and directions only. But i will say, the directions are very easy. You will be spending and additional 400-600 on wood. The end result for me was great. I've bought the full shed kits in the past. The wood is cheap, and not worth the money. If your a do it yourselfer, this is a good beginners kit. I made coop of chicken coops with mine

How many 2x4s, 4x4s and 4x8 plywood sheets are needed? for the basic 7ft by 8ft shed.

For LUMBER only, the following prices are an average from Home Depot & Lowe’s:

7ft x 8ft barn style = $420
8ft x 14ft barn style = $740
10ft x 22ft barn style = $1120

You’d still need pier blocks/footings, siding, roofing, trim, and hardware. So factor in another $240-$400 for those items.

Can the kits be expanded to accomodate a shed twelve feet by twenty feet?

I found the metal gussets barely adequate for a 10ft wide shed.  And the metal parts to hold the studs were not at all adequate - the side walls wanted to bow once the roof was on, so had to toe nail them also.  The gussets at the top of the side walls direct the weight with more of a lateral component then vertical, and the side walls studs do not nail directly into the 2x4 at the top which is at an angle in the gusset there.  That angle also makes putting inside walls up a hassle - the metal gussets slant across the top of the inside wall at an angle which is different from the angle of the 2x4's of the roof/ceiling, so you have to cut a notch for the gusset to extend through on the inside wall and the inside ceiling, and then figure a way to cover that metal gusset.  If you look carefully at the image you'll see what I mean.  If you are not going to have an inside wall or ceiling, not an issue.

Approximately how much will you spent on building materials?

That will depend heavily on the size of the structure you plan on building, the quality of materials you select, and the cost of lumber/roofing supplies in your area.   I recommend taking some time to price out different options - go to the hardware store/lumber yard and run the numbers.   You can probably expect to pay an additional $400 to $700 on the building materials.   Less if it is a small shed with economy materials or if you already have some of the lumber.  More if you buy more expensive/durable materials or if you do not have a source of inexpensive wood.
