Best projector for its price range! But you must set the picture up right..settings below
Hi - i have tried them all! from $80 to 1500 projectors including a couple of Optomas and Benq. UHD50x is the one I am keeping! Make sure to use a quality projector screen! The effect is simply amazing. To maximize the quality of your pic - use the settings below as it really makes a difference (thanks to a poster/PSINERD on reddit where i got it from) A couple of quick things - it is NOT 240HZ unless you connect to a PC and you wont even get 4k@120HZ with a standard connection like firestick or chromecast. Beyond that it works really well - and super fun to watch movies in UHD! -------------------- Main Menu Display Mode: HDR should be selected Wall color: Off (you are using a proper screen, no?) Enhanced gaming: off Aspect ratio: auto Edge mask, Digital zoom, keystone, Image shift all should ideally be off or zero for the best image quality. Image Settings Sub-menu Brightness: 0 Contrast: 50 Sharpness: 15 Color: 8 Tint: 0 Gamma: Graphics Ultra detail: off Dynamic black: off (causes annoying brightness changes) Dynamic Range Sub-sub-menu HDR/HLG: auto HDR Picture Mode: Standard or detail (to taste--may need to play with this one a bit, but I find that bright washes out the highlights) Color Settings Sub-sub menu Brilliant Color: 5 Color temperature: D75 (or to taste. D65 is tOo yellow/orange for me and D93 is too blue.) Color gamut: HDTV CMS: all defaults, RGB Gain/bias: all defaults Color space: auto

Getting the full picture is great... getting half the picture is not.
The projector is great when it works. I upgraded from a BenQ 720p short throw and can happily see the difference when watching the same movies. It also does a great job despite having a large amount of light in the room. It's better of course when you can eliminate other room lighting, but for those of you with difficulties doing so, this projector is a good option (if not for the technical concerns outlined below). Comparing it against my previous short throw, the picture is considerably smaller. Using the same throw distance (roughly 10'), I lose about 30" of screen diagonally. The resulting throw is about 108". There is also a fairly large shadow that surrounds the screen, but I understand this is due to the chipset that is used in the projector and is common for others in the same price range. Overall, I would highly recommend going 4k when choosing your next project. The reason I'm giving this only 1 star is due to the limited amount of time I've been able to enjoy the projector. After mounting it, getting the picture dialed in, and watching a few movies from my Xbox, I noticed that it is frequently needing to change the resolution between apps. While this is mildly annoying since it will blank out the picture for about 5 seconds, the projector I have is not particularly good at changing the resolution. As time goes by, changing resolution more often than not results in losing the left half of the picture (see attached photo). I noticed it happen the first time about 2 weeks after mounting it, and now that a month has gone by, I'm seeing it multiple times a day. I currently have a ticket open through Optoma and hope to get a handle on why the picture is dropping out. This is easily a 5-star projector if not for the technical issues that I hope are unique to mine.

What an upgrade from my trusty 1080p Epson
After 8-9 years (!) with an Epson 6500UB (and 3ish lamps) I hungered for a boost in resolution. I was concerned that I'd lose the 'ultrablack' from the UB moniker but those fears have been completely abated. This is maybe the 7th projector I've owned over the years and the detail/picture quality/contrast are all fabulous. I have a 128" wall that I project onto (I've had a half dozen screens over the year, super happy with my custom-painted light gray flat wall) and, while not everything is visibly 4k, the things that are really pop and look more 3d (ie. better depth, really a function of contrast and detail). Rings of Power on amazon is a great example of what this projector can do - it's a breathtaking experience. There are two weaknesses, neither are connected to picture quality. First, the remote is terrible. Range is bad, it's unresponsive, it's the worst projector remove I've ever used, by some margin. Second, I need that stupid remote more than I ought to because the projector tries to pull up it's own 'smart tv' menu and 'creative cast' when it's firing up, necessitating me to change inputs back to HDMI 2 (the only input I ever use) way more often than I'd like to. Once I'm up and running, no complaints, but it's both a terrible UI and a terrible remote. Overall, beyond happy. I watch in Eco mode (not Eco+ as the auto-iris brightness adjustments are distracting for me) even on sunny mornings when the room is lit more than I'd like, and it's still plenty bright.

Pretty good, with annoying quirks, especially the "fake" input
Picture quality is good. The 4k quality is why you buy this projector. HDR and stability are NOT why you buy this projector. HDR: Not sure ANY projector is supposed to really excel here. The technology is supposed to work for TV's that can control the brightness of individual pixels. I cant speak for all projectors, but I can say this one doesnt really seem to do much with HDR enabled. Some reviews even hint that HDR looks worse on this projector when enabled. I think its a toss up. Dark scenes get better, color contrast gets a little better, but the overall picture suffers just a little bit. So its even. Stability: This thing is a basket case. I have so far used it with an Xbox one X and anthem avr720, so PERHAPS one of these other things is to blame. BUT, since the projector ends up "crashing" half the time (even using it with my PC), I blame the projector. I mean, who ever heard of a projector crashing? Picture will go dark, go sparkle fuzzy, change to the wrong resolution (720p/1080p) etc or lose HALF the picture. Sometimes plugging and unplugging the HDMI cable (which requires a ladder, uh) works, but other times a restart is required, which is a real date killer. It TAKES FOREVER TO BOOT UP! But it seems to happen when the Xbox changes frame rates due to source material. Also, this seems to have maybe started when I needed to use a 90 angle hdmi adapter (generic and audioquest). You will have more problems if you need two angles. The picture may never even show up. Lastly, the HDMI cable DOES MATTER. Im using 12 feet, and I went through THREE amazon cables when finally the stupid $100 Audioquest cable is the one that work. Its absolutely ridiculous that you need an expensive cable for this thing to work right. The "fake input": The instruction manual will lead you to believe that both inputs are the same. I even called customer service, and they "verified" that both inputs are "exactly the same." Input 1 is NOT the same as input 2. Input 1 will NOT accept 60HZ and has a hard time transmitting HDR. No matter what source, what cable and/or whether or not you go through an AVR. You will get 4k, but not 60 HZ. HDR was hit or miss on this input. You will know you have the wrong input when you try to play something at 24fps (most hollywood movies) and the picture is all juddery. You will also need to fiddle with plugging and unplugging to get HDR. It took FOREVER for me to believe my eyes and doubt the very people that make the projector. In case they need proof, I attached a video. Input 1 is no good for smooth, HDR 4k material.

Don't believe the marketing hype - There are better projectors out there
EDIT: Several months in and anytime I enable HDR, I get terrible artefacts. Disable and go back to SDR and they're gone. I thought this might just be an issue with the content, but after testing games, blu rays, and streaming content as well as multiple input devices and cables, it's clear that something is wrong. Even plugging directly into the projector with the newest Roku stick produces bad artefacts. Honestly, I wish I could return it. Pros: • You get a reasonably sharp 4K image • It supports 3D • Low input lag for 1080p gaming Cons: • Bad artefacts when enabling HDR. • First unit I bought was DOA, which I had to return. • Customer support never responded to my requests and neither did their Reddit community person. • Constantly switching signals (searching for input) which can take 5 or 6 seconds each time. Imagine trying to startup a game or movie on your Playstation. The projector will end up changing to a black screen and will, yet again, start searching for a signal. This will happen multiple times. Then the screen finally appears, then HDR kicks in. • Takes forever to find signals. • Takes a long time to boot. • Sometimes doesn't ever find the signal. I have to turn everything on in a precise order to get it to work and even then, it sometimes fails to find my signal. • Black level are not very good. Basically the same as my 6+ year old Viewsonic which still had its original lamp. • Loud... man, this thing is so loud and it's not a constant fan speed so during quiet scenes you just hear this constant revving up and down. • It is on their site now. If you select it, the resolution is forced down to 1080p. This is a known issue and they refuse to acknowledge or fix it. Input lag measured by the community is double (~50ms) what is claimed on their website. • Colors get screwed up when turning on the projector or when the resolution switches; forcing you to turn the thing off, wait...., and then turn it back on. • There is an issue where half the screen look fine and the other half has washed out colors. For context, I'm using: • Expensive/high end RUIPRO 8K HDMI cable • Denon AVR-S960H 8K Receiver • PS4 Pro / Roku Streaming Stick+ This feels like rushed product where they spent as much time on marketing as they did on development. I'd like to have a conversation with the engineers who designed this thing to find out what went wrong. Meanwhile, Optoma does not care at all. They'll just release new products while this one fades into obscurity without any further updates or support.

Perfect first Projector
Extremely happy with this purchase. Was overwhelmed with researching projectors, and learning everything I needed to know about them. Luckily this ended up being perfect for what I needed at a good price. So I currently use this projector in my bedroom as my primary screen for Gaming/watching TV. I have it hooked up to my PC via a 25ft HDMI cable, and it acts as a second monitor. The projector is about 11ft from the wall I cast on, and I get a solid 120inches. I agree with other users that the Optima OS/remote sucks, but since I use it was a second desktop screen, I never have to use the OS or remote. I turn on my projector and use a wireless mouse/keyboard from bed to control Windows. Same thing if you have PS4/XBOX, you'll end up using that + a controller instead of the Optima OS/remote. No issues gaming on it. The picture is amazing, blows away anyone who sees my setup for the first time. Highly recommend also purchasing a 120inch Silver Screen

A projector with a pipe dream
This is the first time I have been motivated (aggravated?) enough to leave an amazon product review. I bought UHD50X as a 4K, gaming friendly, upgrade from BenQ w1070 that I used for a solid 5 years. I consume a *ton* of media (mostly movies) but have also been a lifelong console gamer (mostly FPS). Pros: - Great image and brightness - Lens shift and zoom make setup and alignment painless - Lots of image presets, calibration options, dynamic black, more tune-able than my old w1070 Cons: - !!!!! Enhanced Gaming Mode (EGM) is downscaling 4K input signals to 1080p !!!!! Optoma has refused to acknowledge this issue, or clarify if it can even be resolved through a firmware update. The current consensus from UHD30/50X owners is that Optoma incorrectly measured latency on the EGM '4K' signals (actually 1080p) during production and accidentally misrepresented the projectors capabilities in their marketing. This means that is may be physically impossible for this projector to output 4K @ 25ms. If you are intending to use this projector for the upcoming Xbox Series X / Playstation 5 -- please do not purchase this projector. For more information, you can also see Adam W's review here on Amazon and some of the other discussion happening online (avsforum, reddit, ...) - HDMI negotiations seem rather slow (signal changes, resolution changes, fps changes), at least much slower than my BenQ w1070. - I kind of wish the 5v/1.5A USB port provided for powering devices on the back of the projector could power the plugged in device, even when the projector is off. - The remote is... really cheap as everyone has mentioned. But that's the least of my concerns. ---------------------------------------------------------- TL;DR: This is a reasonable projector. Enjoyable for movies, but its 'gaming mode' is busted for 4K. Consider alternative projectors for next-gen gaming experiences.

Low quality - High Input lag at 4K - Low 4K Image Quality - Poor HDR - Keep Looking.
TLDR: Low Quality Projector - Stay away if you want a 4K projector with low input lag - Keep Looking or Save your Money Gamers : Don't buy this if you want 4K HDR with low input lag. Movie Fans: Look elsewhere if you want proper 4K image quality. Product flaws that all buyers should be aware off before purchasing. 1) The low input lag in 4K Mode is a lie. In my own testing, the best I've ever gotten was 52-59ms of input lag at 4K 60hz. The advertised low 25-30ms at 4K 60hz is not correct. I tested the input lag with a direct connection to a XBox One X, PS4 Pro, PS5, XBOX Seriesx X, NVIDIA 2080Ti and a NVIDIA 3080. Do not purchase this projector for low input lag at 4K. 2) This is not a good HDR projector. The peak brightness is much too low. Look elsewhere for proper HDR. This is worse than HDR400 on PC monitors. Color output also doesn't encompass the full Rec2020 range. I bought this projector specifically for 4K HDR with low input lag at 60hz. 3) The projector literally has 0 ways to adjust the picture quality. Even basic options such as brightness, contrast, gamma cannot be adjusted from the menus. 4) The projector is extremely loud even when mounted on the ceiling. The fan noise, is extremely distracting when watching a movie or playing a game 5) The projector gets extremely HOT, even when mounted from the ceiling with lots of air flow. 4) HDMI 2.0b port has major desynching issues. The projector will lose signal very often. The screen will turn blue and it will try to re-establish connection, often failing. The user will have to manually press the HDMI buttons on the remote. This is not a HDMI cable issue. I used 3 different brands of Fiber Optic HDMI cables and 5 different standard Premium HDMI 2.0b cables. All of the cables worked fine on a LG C9 and LG CX TV so the cables are not to blame. 5) Half of the screen will flicker and be darker than the other side at random times. You can read about this issue on AVS Forum. The firmware update available on the product webpage does not fix this issue. 6) If you MUTE the audio on the projector you will have an ugly MUTE icon on the top right of the projector that doesn't go away. To get around this you have to leave the projector unmuted but turn the Volume all the way down to 0. 7) The remote is very cheap. Most of the buttons on the remote don't work because the projector doesn't expose any of the functions that you would normally find on a projector. 8) Poor Warranty - Optoma refuses to pay for any shipping for repairs even if product is within the warranty window. Warranty service is severely lacking. The RMA process will take 1-2 months as well. I am extremely dissatisfied with this product. I have never had this much buyers remorse with any other product ever. In retrospect, I should have immediately returned the unit once the desynching issues started. Learn from my mistake, look at other projector manufacturers. In comparison, my ancient Epson 8350 1080p projector still works flawlessly. Historical Information: After 6 months of lots of video synching issues at 4K or 4K HDR, the HDMI 2.0b port on the projector is now completely broken, refusing to accept any 4K signal from any device. When I first received this receiver I had major desynching issues right away. The picture would randomly disappear, the screen would turn blue and then it would begin the signal searching process. Sometimes, it would detect the signal but many times I had to manually force the projector to search for a signal by pressing the HDMI button on the remote control. This would happen multiple times during a normal 3hr movie or gaming session. On the day the unit broke, I used the device for about 4hrs with my PS5 and ROKU Ultra. It took about 20 minutes of retrying until the desynching finally stopped. Then after ~3 hours of playing games and watching a movie, the projector lost signal completely and now refuses to output any 4K signal any longer. The HDMI 2.0b port appears to be completely broken now. I checked the cables and they all work fine on other devices. I have started the RMA process with Optoma.
