Kimberly’s Book Review The book Love That Dog is about Jack, Sky, and poetry. Jack likes the short poems the best, and so do I. Jack loves his dog named Sky. [Spoiler alert] I don’t like it when Sky never wakes up again because it makes me feel sad. Sky is cute, yellow, and drools a lot. That’s the part I like the most. I am 7 years old. I would recommend this book to 6 year old kids and older. Lauren’s book review This book is about a little boy named Jack. He learns to read and write poems at school but thinks they are for girls not boys. After reading some poems he starts to like poetry and writes a poem about his yellow dog. I am 8 years old and I liked this book. It was easy to read. I liked it because it is emotional and funny at the same time. Any age can read this book. Carolyn’s Book Review The book Love That Dog is full of poems. It’s a really good book. Jack is a boy. He talked about his yellow dog named Sky. [Spoiler Alert] Sky was run over by a blue, muddy car. It makes me sad a little. I like this book because Jack’s yellow dog is cute. I also like how he did his poem that was shaped like Sky. It’s a medium sized book. I am 9 and I’d highly recommend this book to 1st grade students and up. Katelyn’s Book Review: I really liked the book Love That Dog. I liked it because it told a really good story about Jack’s life and his dog Sky. In the beginning I did not like it, I thought it was boring. But then it got very interesting and I wanted to keep reading it forever. I really liked that it was funny and sad at the same time. Sharon Creech made poems really funny and enjoyable to read. I really loved Love That Dog.

My 10 year-old son normally hates poetry, but this book was cute, funny and engaging. He flew through the book in under an hour. In the middle of the book, he was inspired to stop and write a poem... without any prompting! This has never happened before and I was thrilled! This is a great book, especially for boys, to help them discovery the joy of poetry! I appreciate that all of the poems referenced in the book were available at the end of the book. My son and I went through these together before he read the book. I believe going through these poems first helped my son relate better to the story.

My child came home from school completely enamored by this book. When I read it with him, I was hooked as well. I'm not a professional reviewer like so many others here, but I am a mom who has read countless books with her kids. And this one is outstanding. What I love about this book is that it covertly introduces poetry to kids. And it hooks them by introducing them to what I'm going to call "mind benders" like "The Red Wheelbarrow." It's also written like a response journal. I'm so thrilled that the dots are not connected here, that you have to think and infer and create the missing parts of the narrative. I also love that it introduces poetry to kids in a non-threatening way. (The main character doesn't understand some poems and writes "honestly" about that in his journal.) I found my child completely agreeing -- what DOES the poem about the red wheelbarrow and the white chickens mean??? The author brilliantly includes the poems she references (the back of the book) so you can read them while/after reading the book itself. I cannot say enough great things about this book.

Sharon Creech's short middle grade novel, “Love That Dog,” is a story in poetry form. Jack, the main character, is studying poetry in Miss Stretchberry’s English class. Each time he studies a poem or author he likes, he writes his own poems in the same style. The story plays out over the course of the school year—which is much longer than most classes study poetry. Sadly the most time spent studying poetry in schools is a month, maybe two. Seeing a book in poetry form that spans a whole school year was remarkable. Seeing Jack learn to express his emotions through poetry was heartfelt and inspiring. The poems used in class are at the back of the book. Note spoiler alert: If I had known it was such a sad story within positive learning poetry story, I might not have read it. Yes, I know the stories that stay with you are the ones that plunk your heartstrings and pull out deep emotional responses. I guess I needed to be better prepared--the lightheartedness caught me off guard--probably more emotional that way. Recommended for ages 8-11.

I want to read this with my creative writing kids but worried about the dog poem ...that was very upsetting , even fore as an adult. I love how it makes poetry accessible though

A teacher I was subbing for had a copy of this on her desk a few years ago, I read it during my lunch break and was floored at how I had never heard of this book before. It's a very touching love letter to poetry, and is one of those books I think you can appreciate at any age. I've gifted it to a few of my students and can't recommend it enough.

This is a short but moving story of a boy who is VERY reluctant to write poetry at the beginning of the school year. It is in open verse form itself and chronicles his evolution into a writer over the course of his year. Along the way, he (and we) are introduced to many kinds of poetry through examples which he explores and uses as a guide. In this way, one's class can also follow the same format. He discovers that poetry can be a way to deal with very important moments in one's life, and the surprise ending will have you reaching for tissues. It is honest, funny, and moving.

Great book written in prose. Great story. Poetry in the back of the book to read before reading the actual story for some background. Great read for students to introduce them to poets and poetry.

Ein ausgesprochen tolles und wertvolles Kinderbuch. Ich las es zuerst in der deutschen Übersetzung und wollte es dann der englischen Gedichte wegen auch noch in der Originalsprache lesen.

My daughter needed this book for a school assignment and then enjoyed reading it after! Happy to have bought this book!

Au programme du CM1 / Grade 4 dans l’école bilingue de ma fille. Pas facile au début de comprendre. Mais une fois qu’on y est c’est super mignon. On veut savoir la suite. Littérature anglaise qui nécessite de bonnes bases mais livre court.
