Floored 1
Duncurin has had his conservatory blitzed and as part of this, what was two rooms is now one. Trouble is we were hoping to extend the wooden floor into the new conservatory. The floorer came and of course I was expecting him to say that he’d sort it that afternoon and it would take no time. Sadly he said that the old floor was much too high and he couldn’t lay a floor on; it then he disappeared. He had no idea what we could use to sort it or who to ask. I looked online and there are all sorts of companies that fettle floors and concrete but most are big concerns. One had a minimum order of £10,000 , gulp. I had seen an angle grinder used to cut and shape concrete so I looked on YouTube and eventually found a thing called a diamond cup grinder. I knew that I could order all the things I needed on Amazon and they were overnighted so that I could start work the following day. As I have revealed on many occasions Duncurin is a weedy chap and not skilled in DIY. I’m the sort of man you’d stand next to at the bar and know you’ll be served first and then you’d worry if I really could manage that half lager shandy that I’d just ordered. All in all, I was terrified that I wasn’t going to get through and everyone I emailed as regards professional floor grinding ignored my enquiry. Enter this angle grinder from Makita. I purchased this not only for its keen price but also because I had heard somewhere that it was a reliable and reputable make. I have bought a couple of power tools from my local DIY warehouse and usually buy their own brand as they are good value and I feel for an inexperienced beginner like me it’s not a bad place to make a start. I chose the Makita on this occasion because I knew if I was going to grind a whole floor then it would have serious work to do and I also knew that the cup grinder I was planning to buy and crucially the vacuum extractor shield thingy – both reviewed separately would fit. Away I went, and the machine rose to the challenge much better than I thought. Of course, it goes without saying that you need lots of protective gear; ears, eyes and of course a mask. The amount of dust produced, even with extraction, is really scary. Also of note is the fact that the machine gets really hot so wear gloves and of course pause every once in a while, lift off the floor but keep it running – be careful – the fans inside will help to cool the motor as it runs under no load. The machine has a switch that allows it to stay on but it is awkwardly placed and it’s hard to activate when you have gloves on and especially so when your hands start to ache as mine did – perhaps feel as if they were on fire would be more accurate. I suspect this is where you need to exercise extreme caution as you grapple with it attempting to get it to come on. I also paused every few minutes as my knees and my back were also killing me. The machine is fairly smooth and seemed powerful enough. I had ear protection but I can’t say that it seemed unduly noisy. Most important, please remember that this model runs at 110v and you’ll need to hire or buy a 110v transformer thingy to connect it up and to run it. These big yellow plugs come in at least two sizes so make sure you check the diameter of the plug before you purchase or rent. Please see my other reviews for the diamond cup grinder and also the vacuum extractor shield thingy. Ultimately, the floor area was too large for me to use a hand held device and I hired a monster floor upright grinder from HSS – this worked beautifully, after an abortive start and for a large area then this is what you’ll need – mercifully it’s not too heavy when you get going although the amount of dust it can produce is truly terrifying ! Pics show floor area 4m x 3m and Makita angle grinder fitted with extraction shield and diamond cup grinder.

Top brand, but requires a transformer.
Top brand but it required a transformer. I needed something I could plug directly into a normal socket so I had yo return it but it e t a very good price

Stopped working after 2 minutes of use.
Having purchased quite a few Makita products over the years, I’ve always been a fan of both the quality and longevity of their design. Unfortunately this angle grinder stopped working after less than a few minutes of use. Smoke started to appear from the cooling vents and the motor has seemingly burnt out after less than one use. It could be that this product had been damaged at some point before I received it but even so, this shouldn’t happen.

Good for the price
Great angle grinder for the money, works good but the only thing that let's it down is the on off switch which can go out of place when turned on, my old bosch never does this
