Winsor & Newton Artisan Studio Paint Set

This is NOT a toy - they are legitimate oil paints that do NOT require the use of toxic solvents (what a relief for us asthmatics). Lovely texture and colours (though I rounded out the palette with a few more colours). I'm used to painting with acrylics, and couldn't try oils because of sensitivity to turps. Painting with oils is tricky at best to get things right and for your work to last, so don't expect it to be easier with Artisan paints - you still have to think about all the "rules" - proper mix of paint, solvent (in this case water) and medium when layering; fat-over-lean; what support you're painting on; clean-up (these cleanup with soap and water but still requires care so as not to poison the environment...as much); etc. BUT these are definitely worth a try to avoid noxious fumes from solvents, especially if you're painting at home, have children or pets, or are sensitive to turps. Might be a good purchase along with something like "Oil Painting for Dummies" if you're a TOTAL beginner.

Regarding the studio set I ordered I am delighted with the set. The range of paints is wide and the set comes with the added bonus of two brushes and some water diluteable linseed oil medium. I like the idea of these water diluteable paints as they dry quickly, and do not give off odours. Fine detail can be acheived with a rigger and by using another medium , for example stand oil. Also when using water alone be careful not to dilute too much. Brushes are easy to clean with water, I have made myself some canvas carrying boxes which allow wet paintings to be transported easily and safely and which therefore allow " en plein air" work. Excellent seller will use again.

Bought for my daughter as an introduction to oil painting. She usually used acrylic or water paint. She liked the oils and finds them easy to use. Very happy with the set.

I love these. Perfect drying time between acrylic and oil. Only 4 stars as I’m not sure yet about how texture will stand up after time, as in will thick paint dry to a hard finish.

I was completely puzzled how to use it. But once i realised it just needed water to thin, it was easy peasy. I have been painting with traditional oils and turps all my life, but i am now a convert to water based oils. And all paint stains on clothes wash off easily.

If I had purchased this Windsor & Newton Artisan Water Mixable Oil Paint set as a gift, I would sadly have to have returned it straight away. Each of the tubes of paint had the appearance of having been squeezed at the sides and there were remnants of paint inside the screw cap, as though somebody had previously had this set, used a bit of paint from each of the tubes and then returned it! I urgently needed the paints for a tuition class, so I kept them. Have to say though, I am very impressed with the set, the paints mix well with water (so no nasty smells) and also clean really well with water, just a shame that I didn’t feel I was receiving brand new tubes of paint, otherwise I would have given five stars.

Great starter pack for someone trying oil for the first time. This is a brand you can depend on.

Ich bin total begeistert! Die Farben sind besser als erwartet, wahrscheinlich aber auch, da ich bis jetzt nur mit billig Marken gearbeitet habe. :') Das Set kommt wie im Bild in einem etwas größeren Karton als man auf dem Bild erwartet, mit den Farben, einem Fläschchen Leinöl und 2 Pinsel. Die Flasche Leinöl sieht inzwischen etwas anders aus, aber das ändert nichts am Öl selbst ;) Anfänger könnte die etwas größere Farbauswahl überfordern weswegen ich für solche lieber die Starter Version mit 6 Farben empfehle. Die Qualität der Farben empfinde ich als sehr sehr gut, riechen auch überhaupt nicht wie man es von herkömmlichen Ölfarben eigentlich kennt. Kann das aber mit nichts gleichwertigem vergleichen, da ich bis jetzt nur mit Wasserfarben und Gouache gearbeitet habe. Auch wenn das Artisan Set als wasservermalbar gilt, würde ich die Farben nicht mit Wasser anreichern. Wenn das Wasser trocknet, wird die Farbe milchig was nicht unbedingt schön aussieht. Der Vorteil von wasserlöslichen Farben liegt mehr darin, dass man kein Terpentin braucht um die Pinsel auszuwaschen! Ich habe jetzt nur Wasser für die unterste Schicht bzw Skizze verwendet, danach nicht mehr bzw nur zum reinigen der Pinsel! Dementsprechend sollte man auch aufpassen, dass man auch Malmittel speziell für Artisan bzw. wasserlösliche Farben benutzt. Habe den Fehler gemacht ein Malmittel für normale Ölfarben verwendet. Dadurch ist es nicht mehr möglich mit Wasser zu arbeiten und/oder die Pinsel problemlos zu waschen, bzw es erschwert zumindest das ganze. Im beiliegendem Prospekt werden nochmal alle Malmittel speziell für Artisan aufgelistet und erklärt ;) Alles in allem ein sehr gutes Set womit ich mehr als zufrieden bin! Zwar teuer, aber der Preis lohnt sich, letztendlich muss man sich nicht auch dieses Set holen, mit weniger Farben kann man genauso gut schöne Bilder zaubern!

Il set è completo e ti permette fin da subito di cominciare a dipingere. A parte i colori c`è una boccetta di olio di lino, per diluire il colore, e due pennelli: uno a punta tonda e l`altro a punta piatta. I colori vanno diluiti con l`olio e i pennelli puliti con semplice acqua, evitando il cattivo odore ( per non parlare della tossicità) della trementina o dell`acqua ragia. Li consiglio tantissimo sia come acquisto personale ( avete un set a olio completo con meno di 50 euro ) sia come regalo che sicuramente sarà apprezzatissimo. Lascio in allegato un dipinto che ho fatto, ancora non finito, per far capire la resa che hanno. Il supporto è della semplice carta da spolvero trattata prima con due passate di colore acrilico ( visto che non avevo il gesso acrilico)

Great quality paint and good selection of warm and cool primaries for an introduction to oils. Up until now, my work was primarily in watercolour or mixed media and have avoided oils due to the clean-up and toxicity of some of the chemicals. No need for turps or other solvents with this water-mixable oil. Good that it comes with a medium as well. Really like the medium as it gives extra flow to the paints (rather than using water which doesn't give the same results). I also love the fact that brushes can be cleaned in water. Three bottom panels were a few quick studies as my first try with these paints. Good mixing capabilities and pleased with results although drying times are a bit long compared to watercolours!

Francamente non ho parole per descrivere l'eccezionalita' di questi colori, che hanno in tutto la resa degli oli classici, ma l'enorme vantaggio di pulirsi con un po' d'acqua!!!!! Per me che ho varie allergie erano proprio quello che cercavo, non uso piu' i guanti mentre dipingo, perche' basta lavare le mani con acqua e via! Poi bagnare il pennello in un po' d'acqua ed e' pulito,come se usassi l'acquerello! Stessa cosa se si fa un errore sulla tela, l'errore si cancella passandoci un po' d'acqua sopra! Non puzzano, hanno tempi di essiccazione lunghi, permettendo di riprendere il lavoro il giorno dopo. Per chi come me non sopporta solventi e ha allergie, o come me ha bimbi in casa, li stra consiglio! Mi dispiace per quelli che hanno pregiudizi su questi colori, dicendo che non sono la stessa cosa degli oli classici; sono, infatti, solo pregiudizi! Personalmente , se volete eliminare per sempre il fastidioso odore di trementina, solventi e tossicita' varie e rendere le vostre sedute di lavoro uno spasso e non una faticaccia. ecco per voi i colori giusti!

Great as a start up set for any artist. Great quality product with professional results. Love the ease of cleanup as well. Soap and water! Highly recommended.
