Icy Box IB-3620U3 External 2 Bay JBOD System for 3.5 inch SATA I/II/III HDD

Love this item. I decided to buy an enclosure to hold two 3.5 HDDs for my Home Theatre PC. Did my research and settled on the IcyBox. Have to say - I'm glad I did. What a quality bit of kit this is - looks lovely next to my Home Theatre PC and looks very sleek. I've had compliments off other tech-savvy friends who think it cost twice the amount it did. My PC runs Windows 7, and it had no issue finding the enclosure - there's no drivers to install or anything like that, it's just like plugging in a USB stick. I've got 2 x 2TB drives in it - WD and HGST - and they both achieve very good write speeds over USB 2.0. I've tried it on USB 3.0 as well and, as you'd expect, the speeds are blisteringly fast. The fan isn't as noisy as some would have you believe - probably as noisy as a laptop, if that. You can also turn the fan lower if it bothers you. I personally have it on the middle setting and it's barely audible. It's solidly built and it's very easy to take drives in and out, although you'd want to buy more handles for it to be truly hot-swappable. My only gripe is the USB cable supplied is a little shorter than I'd like, but this can be easily rectified by buying a longer one.

Had this device now for almost six months and have had no problems, it works flawlessly and the fan is very quiet (or it is when on speed 1), haven't used it yet in Raid configuration, so can't comment how well that works, but using as 2 single drives works very well. The only niggle I have is that when I initially formatted the drives after formatting the first drive it dismounted, requiring me to reconnect to my PC, but apart from that very good and would recommend.

The unit arrived quickly directly from scan. The unit seemed easy to setup with hard drive hot swap a bonus. The only problem I had with this unit was it was temperamental if you had 2 drives fitted. The first drive always appeared but the second sometimes disappeared or asked to be reformatted, which is not good when you have data on it. If you switched it off then back on it usually came back, which meant after installing a program or update that needed a restart it would need to be switched off and back on hoping the 2nd drive appeared. The return process was a bit of a polava as you need to get a returns number to return it. Scan eventually sorted the returns number and even arranged pickup of the unit and received my refund. Seems I was unfortunate with a faulty unit.

Nice little box and fits in well with my media centre but does tend to cause boot up issues if left in standby mode. Got two new 2tb hard drives and any new drive requires partitioning and formatting before your system will recognise the Icy Box, of course Windows makes the process overly complex and hard to find stock software but a little Googling will show you how. Once all setup I backed up over 100 films using free software called "Bart" and it did a great job in around 30 mins, box connected to USB 3. My only gripe is the boot up issue, just booted up with the box in standby and the PC froze with no desktop icons, forced closed PC and turned Icy Box off and PC then booted normally. This is following a fresh install of Windows 7 Professional 64bit, it may be my fault but no idea why, it's like the PC is trying to read and locks onto one of the drives. No big issue for me as only using this to back up video, ebooks, photo, music etc so will only turn on when need to do this. The good point about Bart is that you can setup custom backups with dedicated colour and it does not duplicate only saving newly added. The build is OK, nothing mind blowing, but does have protective film covering shiny bits that's a bu**er to remove. tj

I thought this was supposed to go into sleep mode. It just removes itself from the USB devices and is no longer accessible. Tried better ventilation, power supply with better current rating. Just too unreliable to use! Don't bother wasting your money

There are a couple of positives to this. First of all, and though not mentioned in the documentation, this enclosure DOES work with linux (I am on Mint 17, both 32-bit and 64-bit versions), and it WILL respond to some smart monitoring tools enquiries. It's acceptably quick, too, for someone used to SATA 150 speeds. Thankfully, I don't need the HDDs I bought it to contain all the time because this unit has a noisy, Noisy, NOISY fan. I bought a 3 metre USB extension cable, to see whether I could ignore the noise at a distance of 2 to 2.5m - the distance for the ISO Standard on measuring acoustics is 0.6m (that's two feet in old money), It is still quite noticeable. In fact, I can hear it from a few feet outside my study. Last nail in the coffin - a question about support left on RAIDSONIC's website went unanswered. I plan to replace it with a proper SAN as soon as I afford it.

I have now been running this external bay for 18 months without issue, a previous model (different design) Icybox let me down due to poor construction of the connectors but this item has been faultless. The fan is near silent and only noticeable if you are very very close to it, the front door hinges open nicely and the two 3.5" drives are secured without any need for tools. The system will power up and down with your PC, the drives stay acceptably cool even when reading and writing data for extended periods.

Nachdem mein bisheriges externes Festplattengehäuse wegen eines Platinenschadens unbrauchbar wurde, begab ich mich auf die Suche nach Ersatz. Ein Punkt für ein neues Gehäuse war für mich ein Muss: auf der Vorderseite sollte nicht nur die LED für die Beurteilung des Betriebszustandes sitzen, sondern auch der Ein- / Ausschaltknopf. Lange genug hatte ich mich bei dem alten Gehäuse (das ich aus Platzgründen in einem Regal unterbringen musste) geplagt, den Schaltknopf auf der Rückseite mit den Fingern zu finden und zu betätigen. Nicht geglaubt hätte ich, dass man für eine so naheliegende Funktion eines Schaltknopfes auf der Vorderseite so lange im Internet suchen muss. Als ich dann das hier beschriebene Gerät sah, war mir klar: dieses und kein anderes! Dass zwei, separat ansteuerbare Festplatten eingebaut werden können und dass das Gehäuse mit einem regelbaren Lüfter versehen ist (Regelung auch auf der Gehäusevorderseite), waren für mich weitere Pluspunkte. Vorwählbar ist auch, ob sich die Festplatten beim Abschalten des PCs mit abschalten oder nicht. Auch ist der Preis nicht höher als für zwei der meisten Einzelgehäuse ohne diese Features. Wer sich für mehr Beschreibung, Bilder und Technikangaben, als bei Amazon zu finden sind, interessiert, kann folgende Seite des Herstellers aufsuchen: [...] Hier noch einige Punkte, die ich vor dem Kauf nicht gefunden hatte: - Der Lüfter ist aus meiner Sicht extrem leise (Umbau auf ein anderes Fabrikat sollte somit nicht erforderlich sein) - Vor dem Einschub der Festplatten ist je ein Griff zu montieren. Hierfür werden Griffe, passende Schrauben und ein geeigneter Kreuzschlitz-Schraubendreher mitgeliefert. Montage der Griffe: kinderleicht - Der Einschub der Festplatten erfolgt über die aufklappbare Vorderseite und lässt sich leicht bewerkstelligen, wenn man gefühlvoll und nicht mit Gewalt vorgeht. - Die Optik des Gehäuses: wunderschön! Die Vorderseite ist bei Anlieferung mit durchsichtiger Schutzfolie abgeklebt, die man nach der Inbetriebnahme leicht abziehen kann. - Eine Beschreibung ist natürlich auch dabei, jedoch könnte man das Gerät auch rein intuitiv in Betrieb nehmen. Bei mir hat alles auf Anhieb bestens geklappt und ich würde das Gerät wieder kaufen. Das nächste vielleicht als Raid-Version. Über eine Langzeiterfahrung kann ich natürlich noch nicht berichten.

Bon eh bien voila, après unex expérience malheureuse avec un Bluestork, je me suis décidé à acheté ce modèle. Donc je confirme que ce modèle ne fait pas de RAID. Sinon, tout est nickel et fonctionnel. Beau boîtier, cependant il faut quand même attacher des support sur les disques donc 2 petites vis/disque. Allumage oh surprise pas de bruit le ventillo est bien silencieux. Les disques sont reconnus direct avec Raspberry comme deux disque distinct. Voila depuis 15 jours en conitnu et aucun souocis. Une led bleue indique les IO sur les disques. Bref que du bonheur. La boîte vaut bien sont prix. Tchaos

Box per la gestione di due hard disk SATA da 3.5" semplice ed efficace, dalle dimensioni estremamente contenute. La preparazione dei dischi richiede il fissaggio di una maniglia per facilitare l'estrazione dal box, quindi basta inserire il disco nell'alloggiamento fino a sentire l'innesto del connettore di fondo ed è pronto a funzionare. L'apertura dello sportello in stile frigidaire rende agevole le operazioni di inserimento e rimozioni dei dischi. Le unità si presentano al sistema operativo ospite con volumi separati ed indipendenti, non si rilevano impuntamenti o incertezze nell'accesso e durante il trasferimento dei dati. Un appunto negativo riguarda la silenziosità della ventola, che anche al minimo dei giri è piuttosto udibile e sovrasta il rumore prodotto dai miei dischi WD Caviar 7200 giri. Ho ovviato al fastidio sostituendola con una silenziosa ed economica Super Silent Fan 6 (ASIN B01HTNI3D6), adesso va decisamente meglio.

2016-12-09 Es una caja que llegó precintada, sin uso. La primera vez que la conecté, cuando estaba el ordenador encendido, me daba un error en windows (Windows 10) deciendo que el dispositivo USB conectado tiene problemas. Si se va al administrador de dispositivos, lo identifica como error 43. Después de intentar desinstalar el dispositivo y volver a instalar y seguir el problema, probé a puslar el botón de encendido varios segundos para forzar su apagado, al encenderlo, todo funcionó correctamente. Quizás realmente este sea el proceso correcto de iniciarlo una primera vez, forzar el reinicio, pero en el manual no se dice nada realmente, dos páginas tamaño cuartilla. Es mejor bajar la versión PDF desde su web que cuenta algo más. Tras esto, apagué windows con actualizaciones pendientes que dije que instalara, y tras ir al explorador de archivos, no veía la unidad de disco, por lo que probé a forzar el apagado como hice la primera vez, al encenderlo, volvió a reconocer el disco. Tras esta primera mala impresión. Probé a reiniciar el equipo y a apagarlo varias veces en cada caso, y parece que ahora funciona de forma correcta, pero creo que siempre quedará la duda de si volverá a fallar el algún momento y se tenga que reinicar de forma manual, algo que puede ser muy molesto si necesitas que se inicie siempre el disco porque programas que se inician con el sistema necesitan acceder a alguno de los discos instalados. La caja está siempre encendida, solo pasa a stand by cuando se apaga el ordenador. Leyendo comentarios parece que para algunos usuarios es un problema, para mi no, me parece bien que no pase a modo ahorro de energía mientras el ordenador esté encendido para que esté lo más disponible posible. La caja viene con un cable USB que en algún sitio leí que daba problemas porque hacía que se desconectaran los discos, de modo que compré un cable de amazon para estar seguro, aunque luego he visto que el cable es superspeed (USB 3.0) y es grueso y no da mala impresión, pero al no utilizarlo al final no sé si falla como leí o no. Por lo que quizás quien compre la caja puede primero probarlo y luego comprar un cable mejor si es tan malo como dicen. En cuanto a los discos, se conectan muy sencillo, simplemente se apolla en el raíl inferior que tiene y se empuja hasta que se conecta, es muy suave y no requiere de tornillos. Vinen unos tiradores de plástico para poderlos sacar de forma más sencilla, pero al final son opcionales, ya que algún disco si es ligeramente más largo de lo esperado se tiene que instalar sin este tirador. Esto pasa con un Seagate, con un Toshiba se puede poner el tirador. El problema es que los discos, en la parte superior (se intalan de forma vertical) no están completamente bien sujetos, como si ocurre en la parte inferior, y se pueden mover muy ligeramente. Si se utiliza el tirador parece que ajusta mejor o se mueve menor el disco. No es apenas nada, pero es un pequeño detalle que se podría haber mejorado. Lo he probado solo con un disco duro, por lo que no puedo decir nada en cuanto a las funciones RAID, ya que mi idea es utilizar dos discos de forma individual. El ruido, en ajuste automático, no es perceptible teniéndolo a la altura del suelo. En ese sentido veo problemas. La puerta es de plástico pero da sensación de suficiente calidad. El resto de la carcasa es de metal. La calidad más que sufiente en este sentido. Los valores S.M.A.R.T. se pueden leer con cualquier programa que lea esta información, yo lo he probado con crystal disk info y en windows 10, por lo que se puede hacer una monitorización del estado del disco si se desea. Por lo que le doy 3 estrellas es porque cumple sin más, sobre todo por los dos detalles comentados, el problema al apagar el ordenador y no detectarlo al iniciar de nuevo y porque el disco en la parte superior no está perfectamente sujeto, aunque no afecte al funcionamiento en la práctica.

Die ICY Box 2fach wie beschrieben, Inbetriebnahme ohne Probleme. Festplatten habe ich ohne den "Henkel" eingesetzt, da ich das Teil nicht bewege.und die Eingangsklappe habe ich bei den jetzigen hohen Temperaturen etwas offen gelassen. Das schon viel beschriebene Lüftergeräuch ist Gehäuse bedingt, man muß nur etwas justieren und alles ist OK. Die Unterlage spielt eine große Rolle, da sich das Gehäuse dadurch verändert und es dann Geräuche vom Lüfter gibt. Für diesen Preis kann man nicht meckern. Wer es nicht ausprobieren will, sollte eine andere Preisklasse wählen und nicht meckern. Ich bin für die erste Woche zufrieden. Meine Synology NAS ist mit 94% Videos zu voll und ich muß auslagern.Die zwei TVButtler nehmen am NAS fleissig Videos auf. Ich hatte erst die 4fach ICY Box geplant und habe mich dann doch für die 2fach entschieden. Viel im Internet darüber gelesen und werde mir bei Platzbedarf noch eine zweite 2fach ICY Box bestellen. Alle unterschiedlichen Festplatten wurden alle erkannt. PC aus und ICY Box auch aus, ohne mein Hand-Einsatz. Warum nur 4 Sterne, das Netzteil ist etwas schwach auf der Brust, bei 60 Grad schmerzt die Hand und das sollte nicht sein. (sagt der Fachmann) Positiv ein Standardnetzteil-Stecker/-Buchse leicht für das Ersatznetzteil zu beschaffen. Update 27.10.2016 Ich bin immer noch zufrieden. Ein Tipp: Aus Verpackunungskunstoff der elastig ist, zwei Würfel in der Größe von je zwei Stückchen Würfelzucker zu schneiden. Das ICY-Box-Gehäuse neigt zum vibrieren, hier einfach rechts und links zwischen Gehäuse und HDD-Rahmen einsetzen und man hört nur noch das HDD-Laufwerk. 2021-09 immer noch alles OK !
