Q: Is the clock big enough to easily read from a few metres away?

Well, it probably depends on your eyesight! The time is displayed in pretty big numbers and can be read easily from 3m or more back. Underneath the time the station info is much smaller and you'd probably need to be no more than 2.5m. As an aside, the remote works from at least 3m away. Hope this helps. It really is an excellent radio for the money.

Q: Someone said the volume is too high & disturbs their partner, but hopefully it will go low enough so someone in the next room isn't disturbed?

I am listening to my radio as I type this. On the lowest setting the programme (Radio 4 dialogue) is barely audible over the sound of typing. I often listen to the radio in the middle of the night in the bathroom without anyone hearing me during the night.

Q: How long does it take to charge? Is there a battery indicator showing when a charge needed? Is this an energy efficient radio?

charging from empty takes a few hours, it lasts approx 6 hours on battery only. There is a battery level indicator in the top right of the display panel, similar to that on a mobile phone. The battery also charges while plugged into the mains while you have radio on.
