For somebody with an interest in knowing a little more about the subject with a general interest and enjoyment of art and painting it represents a nice overview of the subject, historical genres and some of the main contributors. As such it provides a good framework on which any future more detailed reading can be nicely situated. For a good introductory and approachable overview I would certainly recommend.

This little gem is a book you want to travel with if you're an art lover like me. It explains art history in a way that's easy to understand and in a way you'll remember. I'm glad I bought it.

I have only recently found an interest in history of art. This book is an ideal companion to refer to and is an easy reference book. It is written in a style that is ideal for novices and more expert followers of art history.

a slim volume ... dissapointingly brief

A great book for people new to art history as it’s informative without being too academic & dry. The author also presents some lovely video clips about art and artists, really bringing the subject alive.

Very interesting bought as a gift

The Kindle version is well produced, the illustrations reproduce very well on a Kindle fire. My only issue is the writing, its reminds me of a teacher in front of a class of ten year olds. But as a basic introduction to the subject its fine. Those with some small background in art history will not find much new.
