Product Description The most talked about and controversial British film for years, The Mother centres around an uncomfortably atypical relationship, far more shocking than that of Harold and Maude. May is an ordinary grandmother from the suburbs. When her husband dies on a family visit to London, she recedes into the background of her busy, metropolitan childrens lives. Stuck in an unfamiliar city far from home, May fears that she has become another invisible old woman whose life is more or less over. Until, that is, she falls for Darren, a man half her age who is renovating her sons house and sleeping with her daughter. desertcart.co.uk Review The movies have their share of gray-haired men romancing young women, but the spectacle of a sexual relationship between an old woman and a young man is still exotic enough for The Mother to startle audiences. Newly widowed Anne Reid, sixtyish, finds herself disenchanted with her indifferent children, and drawn to a studly handyman (Daniel Craig, from Sylvia). The observant directorial hand of Roger Michell guides them through some brutally frank sex scenes, without ignoring the psychological mess that underlies it all. It comes as no surprise that this scenario springs from the mind of Hanif Kureishi, who's been poking at British propriety since My Beautiful Laundrette. The film offers no characters to actually like, which makes it a bitter course to navigate. But Anne Reid's gutsy performance, which carries zero trace of glamour, is certainly a bold venture that asks no pity. --Robert Horton P.when('A').execute(function(A) { A.on('a:expander:toggle_description:toggle:collapse', function(data) { window.scroll(0, data.expander.$expander[0].offsetTop-100); }); }); Review "A superbly acted, taboo-busting drama" -- The Times"One of the most poignant and affectingly controversial British movies of the year" -- Evening Standard See more Review: excellent film - Saw it when it was first broadcast - still compelling to watch with good actors and an interesting storyline. Brilliant. Review: Another darkly enjoyable Michell/Kureishi exploration - This is definitely worth seeing... for several reasons. Anne Reid's performance is superb, so if you want to leave the saccharine of "Last Tango in Halifax" behind and voyage further into the sexual/companionship needs of older people, this film will give you plenty of food for thought. Secondly, there's Daniel Craig... enough said, really. This kind of role he took on, before he hit the really big time (and I'm thinking too of movies like "Love Is The Devil", playing opposite the other half of the Last Tango equation, Derek Jacobi), accounts for some of his best work. Then of course you have the Hanif Kureishi/Roger Michell collaboration... always quite dark, exploring adult issues head-on that many film makers go out of their way to squirm away from... but all in a well-constructed, nicely paced way. If you liked "Le Week-End" and "Venus", give this a go without hesitation.

Easy watching
Very good . I thought it was easy watching for a british film, such good actors/actresses. I have passed it onto my friends.

Daniel Craig is brilliant in this as well as the Ann read
I really enjoyed this film.. if you’re expecting James Bond you will be disappointed but I loved it.. it’s about a mum who nobody seems to notice and just expect her to not have a life when her husband suddenly dies on a trip to London. I’m going to watch again sometime.. it’s 5 stars from me

The mother 2003
Starts of well with excellent acting from ann reid and daniel craig.sadly the third act lets the film down when it descends into hysteria and a ridiculous plot line.shame as up until then it was really good.

Complaint
I have been unable to locate a way to contact anyone to report that when I rec'd my DVD it would not play on my DVD player. After further looking into the internet I found that apparently I am in the WRONG region for this DVD, it can only play on the Computer. I was unable to locate anything on Amazon UK that indicated this situation. I do not watch any DVD on a computer. I was upset that there isn't some kind of explanation when ordering to be aware of the REGION situation. I HAD NEVER HEARD OF THIS REGION stuff before and don't know why I wasn't given the option to order a regular DVD that would play in MY COUNTRY !! After reaching a dead end to getting any help, I sort of gave up and decided I would have to take a loss. If you aren't the right site to assist me, could you forward this? And I was so discouraged that I've wondered if I should order again on Amazon site because of the lack to easily be able to talk to a real Live HUMAN. Anyway, I really just want a DVD that I can watch on my regular DVD of this movie. Thank you for any assistance. mrw

a reminder to the younger generations
Just because we're older in years, it doesn't mean we older women lose our zest for life. It was great to see a film focus on how a woman of a certain age views herself, her relationships with her children and grandchildren, and how she can come to see the possibilities the world still has to offer. Fabulous ending. The cinematography was stunning, especially the seemingly very simple shots. I'm lucky it was recommended to me or I'd have missed a real treat.

In watching this movie you must connect with the mother and view things from her perspective; the way her children respond to her, or not. Put yourself in her shoes and see the loneliness. Be mature enough to put yourself in her shoes. I commend Ms. Reid for being bold enough, and professional, in portraying the character of The Mother. Totally enjoyed this movie.

After failed attempts at finding this movie in stores I ordered it thru amazon and it was worth making the purchase. This was a new side to Daniel Craig and the lead female character (Anne Reid) has a rebirth of sorts in his presence...I really enjoyed this movie.
