The Wachowskis helm this sci-fi action adventure starring Mila Kunis, Channing Tatum and Eddie Redmayne. In the future it is revealed that humans were not born on Earth but the planet was, in fact, seeded by the royal House of Abrasax, the most powerful alien dynasty, 100,000 years ago. After their mother dies, the Abrasax children and heirs to Earth - Balem (Redmayne), Kalique (Tuppence Middleton) and Titus (Douglas Booth) - compete for their inheritance. When Balem, who currently controls the planet, discovers that Earth-born cleaner Jupiter Jones (Kunis) is also an heir he arranges for her to be killed. With the help of interplanetary warrior Caine Wise (Tatum), Jupiter must face Balem as he plans to harvest the Earth. Can she rise to the challenge? The cast also features Sean Bean as Caine's comrade Stinger and Terry Gilliam in a small role. Review: Excellent fantasy sci-fi, Dune-esq in its scope - Really enjoyed this film, reminded me of the awesome Dune in the 80's with Kyle McLachlen and some great British actors. Similiar galactic scope with rival power factions, this time 2 murderous brothers and a good sister, who attempt to gain the inheritance of the Universe from Mila. Ah Mila Kunis, such a sweet young lady with large expressive eyes, reminiscent of a younger Sophia Loren. She does innocent sweetness so well and conveys a virginal vulnerability that is simply touching. The CGI and set design were excellent in this film, loved Jupiter and the giant red eye, though one has to question Eddie Redmaynes character's business acumen in locating his human reclaming plant under a planet-sized hurricane that ultimately blows it to pieces. Ah, young people nowadays, so impulsive. The whole human-animal genetic splicing theme was well realised with great CGI and prosthetics, Tim Piggott Smith was barely recognisable. Nice touch at the end with the DNA helix encoded within the stars. The extras are interesting with viewpoints from the Wachowski directors and actors. You can kind of tell that Lana Wachowski is a transexual and I think shaving her legs or at a minimum a course of dilaporatory treatment or even the highly regarded laser hair removal may be efficiacious. Channing Tatum can act well when presented with a script that requires him to impersonate a dog. Actually that is unfair as he is technically a lychan spliced human being, with a predilection to barking and biting people's throats out. And saving the Universe and Marrying Mila Kunis, thus earning my undying enmity the lucky chappy ;-p Review: Jupiter ascending - Excellent film if your a Channing Tatum fan

Bonkers but enjoyable slice of sci-fi
Big budget sci-fi usually floats my boat and this is no exception. Yes its effects heavy and doesn't always make the most sense in the world but it's fast paced fun and succeeds on its own terms. It's another bizarre effort from The Wachowskis (of Matrix fame and Matrix sequels infamy) and the thing you can always rely on with them is an emphatic surplus of imagination and ambition. Not everything entirely works and they don't always find an audience but it's usually an interesting journey and I find it hard to dislike (see also Cloud Atlas and yep even Speed Racer). I won't regurgitate the plot, it'll only give us all a headache and what Amazon have stated above is enough to get you started. Basically it's a vibrant, action fuelled space opera with all the expected bits and pieces - royalty in distress, daring roguish heroes, space battles, alien critters, feuding families, smarmy bad guys and Sean Bean. Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum make a winning pair at the centre of things, keeping admirably straight faces when required. The film does have a decent sense of humour though which it has to really. Overall it's not perfect but the ideas keep flying at the screen and it doesn't slow down long enough to dwell on imperfections. A fun ride.

A work of art
Sci-fi work of art, beautiful in many ways. Great acting and production values; script, characters and plot worked well I thought, blending action and personal challenge nicely. The central character Mila Kunis' Jupiter is someone we can root for and sympathise with. The supporting roles are all top notch and well drawn. But what will bring you back top this film for watching it again is the art in the scenery, planets and ships, the fight choreography (very 3-D), the equipment and clothes: All are brilliant and quite original. All in all, definately one for my collection and impressed (again) by the Warchowski bother writer and director team's vision. You do not mind slightly corney plot when it as well done as it is here! This was so much more than a sci-fi Prisoner of Zenda! RECOMMENDED

The perils of Jupiter
The Wachowskis, who brought us 'The Matrix', here present another science fiction movie with a wholly original story and concept. Jupiter Jones [Mila Kunis] should seemingly be destined for great things. Having had a father who always looked upwards. But she lives with her large family and works as a toilet cleaner. She stops drifting through life, though, when she's rescued from danger by Caine [Channing Tatum] a pointy eared human/wolf hybrid hunter. Jupiter's existence threatens the power balance between the three siblings of a powerful interstellar family. And the future of the Earth plus everyone on it. Can she survive and claim her destiny and take control of her life? You can't fault this film for ambition and world building. Almost every shot brims with imagination. The directors create wholly alien worlds and characters. There's so much going on onscreen at times, with so much attention to detail to bring the truly alien settings to life. Unfortunately, they can't do the same for the script and the characters. This feels like a franchise starter of a movie. Those need to introduce the audience to the setting. The main characters. And give the latter a good adventure with it. The film succeeds at the first point, but not at the second two. Jupiter is too average a character, who spends most of the time just reacting to what happens. And getting into danger. But why worry about that, when Caine is always there to save her? Sean Bean does have enough acting charisma to make an impression as a war weary veteran. But you're always conscious it's him playing a role rather than thinking it's a character you're watching. Eddie Redmayne, as chief villain, has so little to work with he has to go over the top and chew scenery. Which does make an impression, if not necessarily in the right way. You get almost two hours of set piece then exposition then bit of action. Then back to set piece. This could do with losing about twenty five minutes just to make it better paced. A very imaginative and visually successful film, but as a memorable character piece and story, not something that will live in the mind very long. The dvd has the following language and subtitle options: Languages: English, Castilian Spanish. Subtitles: English, Castilian Spanish, Danish, Finnish, Greek, Icelandic, Norwegian, Swedish. The disc goes straight to the main menu when loaded, with no adverts or trailers first. There are two extras, both short featurettes: Jupiter Jones: Destiny is within us. Runs for six minutes and is all about Jupiter's character arc. It does show you what the writing is trying to achieve. Jupiter Ascending: Genetically spliced. Runs for nine minutes and is about the work done by costume and makeup to make the human animal hybrid characters. It's quite interesting.

Also, cutting edge sci fi, cyberpunk, 'B' movie. To be sure, beyond all else, this is subversive cinema.

I had seen this movie before and thought it was OK, I saw it again after purchasing it on Amazon and loved it! The color and detail of the blue-ray disc was fantastic, I really felt the actors were in the room with me while the action was going on. I don't know why I didn't care as much for it the first time I saw it, perhaps I just wasn't in the mood at that time. I thought the characters were great, but I admit I'll watch almost anything with Sean Bean in it, even when he's playing a bad guy! Mila Kunis was very good in a role that's tough to do without overdoing it. I wasn't sure about Channing Tatum's character at first, but each time I watch it, I find I like him more and more. Even Eddie Redmayne as the villian was fun to watch and root against. I would definitely recommend this film to my friends and associates as a fun movie to watch when you want to be blown out of you seat with the special effects, wild characters ect.

I liked this movie, I brought it, the plot, an earth girl who cleans homes is the DNA reincarnation of a very wealthy “queen” but does her family really want there mum back or will she hurt them where it hurts most, $$$$, will she be enticed to tens of thousands of years of perfect health, or when she discovered how this “gift” is produced will she want no part of it? Very interesting sci-fi story.
