Excellent High Capacity Hard Drive
The SanDisk Professional 8TB hard drive is very well made. Solid construction. Very elegant on the desktop. Drives are also stackable. It plugs into the Thunderbolt connection (cable supplied) of my Apple Mac Studio and was up and running within a few minutes. Drive is pre-formatted. The drive is powered by an external power plug (also supplied). When applying power to my Mac and SanDisk the drive does not spin up but waits for the Mac to power up. Both take about the same time to initialise and be ready for use. Perfect for storing my large photo library for use with Adobe Lightroom. The drive isn’t silent as it’s a mechanical hard drive but it isn’t irritating to use. It sits under my monitor next to the Mac Studio. There is enough audible feedback to show the drive is reading/writing. It is a quiet drive compared to others I have used, and it’s certainly a lot quieter than my NAS drive. Drive temperature is slightly warm when it’s been used for a few hours. Perfectly acceptable. Windows or Apple Mac Operating Systems power down the drive by default to save energy. This can be disabled in the OS settings. It’s easy to find the step by step instructions on the SanDisk support web page.

This HDD is not fit for purpose
This HDD is Rubbish! I used as Time Machine for new Mac Studio and it failed within 8 weeks. For some unexplained reason it throws up an error message which says "A problem has been detected with the disk that prevents it from being unlocked" backup data lost! Then it took three months for a refurbished replacement to be sent out to me, which has now failed again after just a few months. So in 9 months, I have had two units, one new and one refurbished, and now left without a back up solution for my Mac Studio. Frustrated and angry! Even Amazon has now noted on the item page that tis HDD has been "frequently returned" - why are Amazon selling such rubbish!

Exactly what I needed
Great hard drive for what I needed. I'm a wedding filmmaker and photographer and this hard drive is fast enough for me to work straight off of. I don't really understand the noise complaints. It makes a bit of noise but nothing major. I think we've gotten so focussed on everything being silent. I certainly wouldn't say it's a distraction at all. Just a normal hard drive noise.

You might find this desktop hard drive to be overkill or unnecessary for your data storage needs. Conclusion The SanDisk Professional G-DRIVE 6TB is a high-capacity and reliable desktop hard drive that provides fast, durable, and spacious data storage for professionals and enthusiasts who work with high-value content. It is suitable for users who want a premium industrial enclosure that can store plenty of HD photos, videos, music, games, and other files without compromising on quality or durability. However, it is not the best choice for users who need a cheap or portable desktop hard drive that can store less data or use less power.

Reliable external storage
Good value for the money and as usual very reliable. This is the 3rd large storage device I have from Sandisk. Very happy with it. I use it as a backup of a backup drive. Performance is excellent.

Avoid
I’ve bought 5 of these . The drive looks nice and is fast but on my Mac Studio they randomly eject and 2 of them failed for no logical reason. They wouldn’t mount and I had to data recovery software and almost lost an entire tv series I had made. Would y.

G Drive 12TB - Fast big storage
I’ve been looking for a large capacity external drive and the new G drive ticks the boxes. It’s mains powered and quicker read/write speeds make it more appealing than the cheaper WD my book etc. So far this drive has been great (initial back ups in first week). It’s quiet and took about 8 minutes to copy 80gb. It’s far quicker than other external drives I’ve had before but obviously not as quick as an SSD. Time will tell how it holds up

Mine ran WAY too hot - confirmed by SanDisk at WD. Excellent tech support (hence 2*)
This thing idles at a minimum of 53°C, usually 57°C - in a cool flat! Even if you never used it and just switched on your computer, this will slowly crawl up to idle temperatures that are above load operating temperatures. It never sleeps, but does have a power switch. SanDisk told me it should idle at 35°C and that these temperatures are not normal. On load, it runs up to 67°C. This was just on a few hundred GBs as a test. I didn't run the 3TB transfer from an older Hitachi drive that is on its way out. This unit had the 'same', just a newer-gen, Hitachi drive in it. The old 3TB drive stays under 50°C even during long hours of read/write work; so, as it should. SanDisk assured me that it was 'this' one, and that these temperatures aren't normal for this device. But there was no bearing rumble or any noise or vibration that would suggest unusual friction. In fact, it was an extremely quiet drive. I ran the zero-ing out overnight in my one room apartment and slept very well. Speeds were good to better than advertised, with 260MB/s as standard and periods of 270GB/s on a USB-C connection. Tested fine in Western Digital's Dashboard, CrystalDiskMark & Info, as well as HD-Tune. Past all S.M.A.R.T. and surface/sector error tests, as well as a deep-dive with ChkDsk. Not so great on 4KB random access, particularly read, but - most importantly for a backup drive - had generally better write speeds (across the board) than read speeds; and by quite a margin at that. Shame about the waffle-maker effect. It didn't even feel that hot on the outside of the casing; so maybe it was just self-reported cobblers. But I'm not gonna chance it and have my old 3TB drive that's had some cluster errors outlast an overpriced new box. I didn't follow the advice to have it exchanged and shall look for other solutions, maybe a 4TB 3rd-gen SSD (as 4th gen again get too hot). Sadly went back. Second star for excellent, fast, and very friendly support from SanDisk (and then again Western Digital the next day). Dunno what all the nagging is about; most companies won't even let you call them anymore.
