A groundbreaking double album, 1999 catapulted Prince into mainstream superstardom with its fusion of funk, rock, and synth-pop. Featuring iconic tracks like Little Red Corvette and 1999, this album remains a defining moment in 80s music and a must-have for any fan. Review: Not as accessible as "Purple Rain", but fans of the style and of (poppier) Prince will still love it! - I'm going to make the claim that Prince's "1999" isn't as cool as "Purple Rain" (this one starts off worse, at least), but if you like Prince or pop music then you're going to love it anyway. Every song here is great straight-up pop music and everything about it is well done. Prince is still a great singer here, although I WOULD argue that he's more of a guilty pleasure here than he is on "Purple Rain". That's not too much of an issue, but it's something to keep in mind. I would argue that, if you're not into Prince or pop music all that much, then this isn't the Prince album to get. "1999" is the most accessible song here, I think - it's a relatively sweet dance track. Anyways - the musical style here is pretty similar to "Purple Rain", too, as it's essentially new wave, pop and a little hard rock thrown in to make one interesting sounding package - it's definitely 80's, though (it's a tad dated sounding). Its historical importance and style definitely add to its rating and worth. The lyrics are usually pretty interesting and catchy, so they're also worth paying attention to. Overall, I think that this is still an awesome and original Prince album, but I don't think non-Prince or pop music fans will like it necessarily. They might, but the chances of this are less so than on "Purple Rain". If you like the style, though, this is a great CD to own! Highly recommended! Highlights include: the entire album! Review: WOW! - So after all these years of owning this on cassette, CD, and iTunes, I finally get the newly remastered vinyl version, and it most definitely does NOT disappoint! Beautiful sound and quality, just as wonderfully cared for and put together as you would hope! One extra special little thing about it I wish to add: When I first opened this up, I at first thought that there was either a poster in it or the disks weren't present; as it turned out, Paisley Park did something I wish other vinyl rereleases would do; they've enclosed perfect recreations of the original album's record sleeves - and they really are sleeves, make no mistake - but instead of putting the vinyls in them, they instead put them in two ADDITIONAL jet black hued sleeves for safe keeping so that you don't have to use or wear out the original sleeves if you don't want to. Very thoughtful! :)

Pure Genius!
This is one of my all time favorite albums/CDs EVER! It was so far ahead of its time, as is usually the case with Prince's music. I listen to this every day while driving in to work, sometimes while doing homework, or cleaning house. Regardless of what I am doing, as soon as "1999" starts I am ready to take on anything. I adore Prince and admire him for his God-given musical talent and his self-confidence. There is something to be said for a person who can write a number one hit overnight AND play all of the instruments on that number one hit (When Doves Cry from the Purple Rain CD). Not only is he one of the most forward-thinking musicians of all time, he is, without question, THE most talented musician in pop history. He is also the sexiest musician I have ever seen. I thought that when I saw him in concert in 1986 in England, in the movies Purple Rain and Under the Cherry Moon and still think it today, over 20 years later, when he performed the half-time show for Superbowl XLI. Even now, in my 40s, when I watch his movies I get chills just listening to him sing and scream. To meet him would be a 20+ year dream come true for me.

Apocalyptic and weird, but enjoyable nonetheless
I suppose it goes along with Prince's apocalyptic theme of the "1999" track, but the 1999 album is a smattering of progressive tracks that are all delightfully weird. He plays with a lot of sound effects here. It's also perhaps one of his bluest albums in that he says "f---" several times (that doesn't bother me at all, but for those of you who might be offended, it's good to know). I've been listening to this album for years. Insofar as deeper cuts are concerned, I would recommend "Something in the Water (Does Not Compute)" - this is one of the "bluer" tracks I mentioned before, but it's just such a great mix of being both weird (with the sound effects and all) and surprisingly vulnerable. "Automatic" is another good one. Many of the tracks here, like "Lady Cab Driver" and "International Lover" go on for a while, with full minutes of Prince just jamming out, so it's easy to just sit back and lose yourself in the music; you just might (or maybe not, depending on your preference) prefer to be sober when you do. The music is trippy enough without any help.

My 1st Prince album (vinyl) was a Birthday present from Best Friend Darnell. <3 it! 1999, Little Red Corvette, Delirious
'82 Release, 11 Tracks - All the tracks are good, hadn't listened to it an a long time, bought the CD, we were Dancing to it at wife's 1999 Christmas Party, fitting.. 1999, Little Red Corvette, Delirious, Let's Pretend We're Married (like *smile*), D.M.S.R. (like it-Dance Music Sex Romance), Automatic, Something In The Water (Does Not Compute), Free, Lady Cab Driver (favorite also), All The Critics Love U in New York, and International Lover. Album is a good choice, but I have other top favorites, Purple Rain Soundtrack, Girl6 Soundtrack, The Beautiful Experience EP, Emancipation (3 disc set), Graffiti Bridge (liked album better after seeing the movie on cable), & Lotus Flow3r 2009-3 disc set (found unloved at a local Walxxxt) when fresh AA batteries needed for gas fireplace starter before Christmas - store music selection was awful), Rather do Amazon, less aggravation, hate stores where no one knows music. Miss the LA area record/cd stores, 2000 miles away in IL. Enjoy your Prince! I do mine, a musical Hero in my book, hope he keeps it up, does not self destruct. -30-

This review is for the quality I received. Not the album (it’s a great album).

'Mommy, why does everybody have a bomb?' Not the plaintive cry of Jeremy Corbyn, but the closing lines of the title track of this crazily good album of 1982. The range of styles attempted and mastered by Prince on this disc is impressive, but the quality of his music is mindblowing. Featuring 11 of the best tracks he has ever written, 1999 starts with the all out party of the apocalyptic title track, moves on to the sordid pop thrills of Little Red Corvette, progresses through techno (DMSR), funk (Automatic), rock (Delirious), soul (all of them), before ending with the out and out mentalism of International Lover. No other artist could make a pretty ridiculous metaphor (Good evening/ This is your pilot Prince speaking/ You are flying aboard the Seduction 747/ And this plane is fully equipped with anything your body desires) last a full 6 minutes 37 seconds without making the listener either burst out laughing or jump up, turn the CD player off, and hurl the album out of the window. It is to Prince's credit that one actually wishes that the song were longer. He is a God among men.

Que dire des chefs d oeuvre. Il est difficile de décrire la musique avec des mots. Cet album est un incontournable aussi bien par les compositions que par les sonorités ou les textes. C est du grand Prince assurément .
