![Umrao Jaan [DVD]](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/51LuHA8QUmL.jpg)

Bollywood drama about a horseman who abducts a little girl and takes her to Lucknow where she is trained to become a courtesan and becomes famous as Umrao Jaan Ada (Rekha). Many years later, circumstances bring her back to her old home but as a feeling of deja vu begins to overwhelm her, she realises that she can never regain what she lost. Review: Not Bollywood - World Cinema - There just isn't - in my mind - a better Indian film than this. The story is a tragedy of Shakespearian proportions, telling of how Umrao is snatched from her parents and sold as a courtesan and how her search for love is thwarted at every turn. It has music, but the story doesn't stop as the songs and dance are part of Umrao's role as an entertainer to her wealthy clients. And it has great acting, as Rekha won the Indian Oscar (National Film Award) for her portrayal of a tragic heroine of Indian literature ... It's something far better than the typical Bollywood crowd-pleaser, but it's much more accessible than, say, Satyajit Ray's arthouse offerings. I recommend this film to every one of my movie fan friends ... and you will too. Review: These coutresans were like the japanese gheishas - It's an old film. But shows the courtesan history of Indian moslem culture. These coutresans were like the japanese gheishas.Usually there was no sex involved and exchange of poetry and intellectual communication was sought.

Disappointing movie, I thought it would have a better ending but it was really sad. Content was sexist its ok for blokes to visit prostitutes but its the woman that is judged.

Hats off to Mirza Hadi Ruswa and Muzaffar Ali
Mirza Hadi Ruswa has narrated the tale of Umrao Jaan in an elegant manner in his novel. And Muzaffar Ali brilliantly made Umrao Jaan live on screen. Further compliments to Khayyam who composed wonderful music. And finally salue to Asha bonsle, Jagjit Kaur and Talat Aziz for wonerful singing. Rekha has played the character of Umrao by heart. This movie is one of the classic movies of hindi cinema. We have had the chance to enjoy the acting of great actors like rekha, farooq sheikh and nassirudin shah.

Oldie but goldie
This is a rather sad film reflecting a time when a woman's destiny was in the hands of others (plus ca change?). A well observed and touching performance from Rekha with stunning dance routines will reward the patient viewer.

Der Film ist wirklich einer der Besten 80er Bollywood-Klassiker. Rekha, das Kostum, die Musik.. einmalig. Wer Bollywood mag muß diesen Film gesehen haben

A real life story at times even possible in today's world. Movie based on the olden life and the producers have done all to bring the best out of this production of Music and Drama. I came across the performance of Rekha for the first time in the movie Rampur Ka Laxman and very many have since been produced to include this movie star. Costumes, jewellery and decorations have been remarkable as are the Ghazals and the songs for the family entertainment.
