He has managed to bring to light the struggle of a woman to make a living in the cruel and demanding society with maturity and precision. The first half of the movie is told crisp but it gets a little dramatic in the second half. The transformation in Badki s character evolves with time and reason. Not only that, Badki s character is expressed in the most convincing and touching way that we tend to care deeply for her. Especially when her mom asks her not to visit home because the town would end up speaking ill of them, made me feel deeply for her. Cinematography is first-rate. The locale of Banaras is shot beautifully. Music is excellent blending well with the storyline and comes from the same team of Parineeta. Rani Mukherjee is matchless. She delivers yet another award winning performance. Her best performance since Black. The role gives her immense scope to exhibit a gamut of emotions and she carries it out outstandingly. Konkona Sen Sharma looks dazzling in the movie. Her performance in the movie was top-notch and is sure to fetch her good reviews and lots of praises. Jaya Bachchan is flawless. Anupam Kher is first-rate. Kunal Kapoor as Vivaan is good. He manages to perform his act well and appears natural. Abhishek Bachchan as Rohan is just OK. " --www.platform47.com Review: One of my favourite movies! - It's a beautiful story about how a girl struggles to find her place in a new area where she came to find a job in order to provide for her family. Emotional & beautiful. Review: thought provoking - This is a Bollywood movie that addresses issues of expectations, values and restrictions placed on women by society. It also looks at the varying pressures on family members. If that sounds a bit heavy and depressing there are also two love stories and a happy ending.

no subtitles
there's no point in putting a foreign movie on a universal platform and not add subtitles

Laagi Ma aur Baap mein Daag !
Considering the awfulness of the parents, especially the mother, (and this is how many of them really are), what an utter piece of bigoted righteousness, (oh poor me but i suffer by constantly working guilt), the daughter lets them off lightly. She is pretty damn good. Lovely to see A Buchchan be so grown up loving and wise.

An interesting subject
A girl leaves home to provide for, and support her family who have been long suffering from hard times. She fulfils the role of a 'son' who according to tradition is supposed to be the bread winner of the family. Her trust is wounded by a man who gives her the false impression that he will give her a job in exchange for sexual favours but doesn't live up to his promises. Then she is advised to become an escort by a stranger woman she has just met.... And she becomes one... There was something missing which I can't quite put my finger on but I strongly feel that it could have been done better. Such a sensitive issue should have had a more impactful and strong conclusion but it all ended too easy. That's about it.

Not the best but worth a look
Although the prostitution storyline is complete nonsense the two romantic plots are actually quite well handled. konkona and rani are brilliant as sisters and abhishek completely steals the show as rani's love interest. there are a couple of good songs as well. buy it and fast forward through the prostitution storyline and there's still enough material for a good 90 minute feature

Very well made multistarrer YRF melodrama. Describes the plight of a poor family with 2 daughters in severe financial crisis. One moves to Mumbai in search of a job and gets exploited. She sacrifices all her happiness for her family. Dominated by the acting of Rani Mukherjee, but all have acted their roles perfectly. Good 5.1 surround sound and picture quality even in DVD format. Shot in Banaras most of the time. Family and social drama. A must have in any home digital video library. Buy one before it vanishes.

The spectacle, the beautiful scenery, the colors, the music.. I love everything Bollywood! The lead actress was wonderful. The story was heart warming. The only negative part was I thought the two kinsmen (the villains) got off way too easy. I loved it, and I have already watched it about 30 times.
