Helping students to aim for excellence
This resource explains the approach used by schools operating under the EL Education framework. Includes excellent ideas that can be adapted for public/private/charter schools and home schools alike. In a nutshell, the authors urge the reader to make learning goals visible to students so that they become a roadmap from "not knowing" to "success" . . . then allow students choices for how to reach goals at each level. Students who know their own strengths and weaknesses and who have the right to choose from a palette of options for how to bolster their weaknesses to reach goals are better prepared to become independent learners. The video content is also available at the publisher's web site; it will make you want to get a copy of the book for yourself so you can start applying the principles in your own classroom.

Improving Instructional Practices
This was the 2nd book that was assigned during a workshop for improving instructional practices. I enjoyed the explicit case studies of teachers who had specific challenges that are applicable to every school. Some of the ideas are conceptual but they are followed by specific details how to reinforce student learning targets. The book comes with a disk. I have put many of the ideas into practice already.

Wonderful book for any teacher's library.
This is an absolutely wonderful look at student driven success. The ideas that are presented in this text are well thought through and are backed up by research and data. It is an interesting read, and most of the ideas are easy to imply into the classroom. While this school of thought is better implemented in an entire school, there are individual aspects that can be used in any and every classroom.

A MUST for all teachers!
I had to buy this book for my grad class. My favorite text we've used by far! I've recommended it to several teachers I work with and also suggested it to the principal as a required read. It comes with several tips and video clips for different age groups, academic subjects, and how teachers are using tools and strategies in real classrooms.

Practical Insight To Many Strategies Required Today
Many schools require posted learning targets and reviewing of data. However, no one has given practical guidance on how to implement. This book is full of guidance on how to do formative and summative assessments in the classroom. I'm excited to finally know how to implement best practices with my students.

A good, overview of an amazing new learning approach
The book does a great job describing expeditionary learning.with several "case studies" as examples. However, I think the author might agree that a book can not adequately tell the story of why this approach to education is better. It must be seen to be understood. Hands on training of teachers must be involved before success in the classroom can be accomplished. Yet, Berger does make a clear presentation of how and why expeditionary learning is much better approach to education. Letting students "lead" their own learning makes so much more sense than lecturing students all day. Buy it, read this book and then go to a school and see how expeditionary learning should change traditional education. I can only hope it does.
