Mahi Driver Kit

The iFixit kit, oh man do I love this thing. It's has such amazing quality. The kit itself is great for everyday use and has everything the average user would normally need and more just in case. Now to boot, the positives. The case holding all the screwdriver and bits has really strong magnets, even though it doesn't feel like it. I'm able to grab the lid, close it and pick up the entire case, just by holding the lid and while the entire thing is by no means heavy, it's definitely not light. Speaking of the lid, it also doubles as a tray to hold and separate screws. The screwdriver itself is a 1/4 aluminum handle screwdriver with magnetic bit sockets. The magnet is strong and works 100% of the time compared to a fair bit of other screwdrivers i've used that claimed to have strong magnetic only go lose that power over a few days. The screwdriver handle itself has a good bit of weight to it and is really smooth to use. The butt of the screwdrive rotates for ease of use and is excessively smooth and so far hasn't jamed or anything on me which is a major plus, no more needing to turn your entire wrist when using this screw driver. The aluminum body on the driver provides excellent grip, allowing you to apply more force without a chance of your hand slipping. Since the driver itself is made of aluminum it is very sturdy and with the weight of it, if you really needed to you can use it as a substitute hammer too but i wouldn't recommend doing so. Now onto the negatives which is surprisingly few. The first one, might honestly be just my set but the driver bits, like most come from what i can assume greased. That in itself is perfectly fine but for my set, it seems the grease has dried up and became really sticky, which can easily be cleaned and dealt with but still a negative nonetheless. The second one to me isn't really a con but for some it might be, and that is that this is not a torque screwdriver. No clicking of extra torque for those tougher screws but i honestly don't think this driver needs it, the textured aluminum body gives you a strong grip on the driver. Now this was in the positive but can also be taken as a negative and that is weight. The driver isn't excessive heefy but is still fairly heavy. Overall would I buy it again? Most definitely not that i'll have to with the quality of the product and not to mention iFixits lifetime warranty on it's product. Would you recommend the product? Yes, yes, yes, i can't say that enough, if you work with computers or use a screwdriver daily or often enough, this set is perfect for you and all your needs. This will end my review for the iFixit Mahi, buy it if you want a great screwdriver, that provides a great case, amazing build quality and a lifetime warranty. If you're in the market for a screwdriver you're uncertain which one to get, theb i recommend grabbing the iFixit Mahi.

So I was recently looking for some tools to take apart my laptop to replace the crappy thermal paste, unfortunately all my tools were too big for the job. So I picked up the Pro Tech Toolkit, which I am extremely please with it made cracking into the laptop a breeze. But all the bits in that set are for small "precision" work, and I was looking for a great follow on to that only for the larger screws in desktops and elsewhere. That's when I happened upon this Mahi kit. The driver handle is nice and heavy and solid, and feels extremely well made. It spins perfectly and is probably one of the best weighted screwdriver handles I've ever had. This kit includes (at least for me) the missing bits from the Pro Tech kit, with plenty of larger bits capable of general non-precision work. In addition it's magnetic so it makes getting those hard to reach screws in and out a lot easier, which was another consideration for me. If you own the iFixIt Pro Tech kit and are looking to round it out for general computer use, or are just looking for a great all around larger bit kit that's well made. I highly recommend this.

If you're thinking of getting it then let me help by saying just do it. I was on the fence about getting this and have not regretted at all in this purchase. I love this piece of kit soo much that it now has earned a place in my daily carry bag. Its size is perfect and all the bits i could need or have a need for when working with PC's or electronics. Quality and craftsmanship is solid and you will not be disappointed. Im even thinking of getting the larger kit to keep at home on my workbench i wont dive into details and say just get it because you will be very satisfied with it. Unlike many other kits that feel and look cheap this kit will not giv eyou that impression

I like the price and quality of the tool. The handle feels great in the hand and has a good weight to it, which gives me confidence in the tool. The bits are of a good quality, and the variety allows for you to drive just about any kind of screw. Smaller screws, such as those on glasses or phones, aren't really what this set is made for. However, medium to large screws are. I definitely recommend this set to take on the go or to leave in the workshop/house. I also support the right to repair movement they have a large part in spearheading.

First off...I bought this kit for one reason. The really nice driver handle. I was not disappointed. As seen in the photo, it is made from high-grade anodized aluminum with a anodized aluminum spinning cap to allow you to turn it in your hand while pressing against an object. It is all metal, pretty much indestructible within the bounds of reason for something of this nature… You’re not going to hammer on it or use it as a prybar and not tear it up but if you use it within its design considerations as a screwdriver... Should be a lifetime tool. Now onto the bits. 1: Quality: I would rate the quality as Very Good to VG+ depending on which pit we are talking about. The Phillips head and torx bits are very nice as are the posi drive. The Robertson Drive (square) are good but a little soft… The Hex are also in the good category as well as the spline which I would also rate good I have not used the spanner bits. Of all the bits in the kit I find the weakest ones to be the flat head or straight blade bits. They bend pretty easy. I believe this company has a replacement guarantee on bitch so if you’ve bend one you may be able to get it replaced, but at what cost for shipping? Bit selection: The bit selection is pretty good, but I would like to see duplicates of some of the most common types such as #0,#1 and #2 Phillips and #4 & #6 straight. There is easily enough room in the keys for them to have cut it for four more bit holes and included a duplicate of at least four of those bits. Or they easily could have built a little compartment into the top section of the lid and put some duplicates of those bits into that small compartment. Those sizes of Phillips and flat are by far the most common that you will use on a daily basis no matter what country you live in. Case Design: I really like the fact that they used strong neodymium magnets to hold the case closed. I have no problem with the lid staying on and if I need to magnetize a bit it’s easy to use one of the four magnets to put a magnetic charge on the tip of the bit. So tight in fact that some of them are difficult to get out because of the way they are so sharply pointed. I have dropped the entire set with the lid off from 3 feet up onto a carpeted floor and none of the bits came out. That was awesome because I did not want to have to pick up a ton of bits. If you do want to store a lot more bits in your case the foam is removable very easily and you can just store the bits in a little bag or a Ziploc and put the driver in there loose. Or take a razor knife and cut the foam so that you still have the foam cut out for the driver and leave a space for bits to go. That is totally up to you. That is totally up to you, but it is an option I have considered. Driver Handle: This is one of the nicest knurled driver handles I have ever used. The knurling a sharp on my particular example it has three flat sides down at the bottom to enable you to be able to turn it when the screw is really tight or you’re turning a large fastner. This driver is a lot stronger than you might think… If you have a good grip you can put quite a bit of torque on one of the larger bits like a #3 Phillips although it’s still not a big giant screwdriver. It definitely has its place in the medium size rung of the ladder. In my opinion the only downside to this particular driver which is also one of its strengths is the fact that it’s all metal. While the fact that it’s all metal gives it a lot of strength it also makes it not the best tool to work on anything having to do with an electric circuit. Anywhere around live electricity it’s not a great idea to be holding onto a solid metal tool while you stick it into A breaker box or something like that. this is just not the right tool for that job. Also, if you are adjusting something in an electronic capacity like a trimmer cap Or a small inductor… This will probably not be the tool you want to use either because since it’s a big hunk of metal it will add a bunch of inductance to the circuit when you bring it close by. This will throw off your adjustment. I think the bit selection is nice although I probably will never use half of the bits in this kit. But it’s handy to have them. I will say, that amazingly since I have had this kit there has been more than one time that I have needed a bit that it did not contain actually several times. Somehow it seems like no matter how many bits you bring with you that you never have what you need. That’s the great conundrum. I wish in this case that the sizes of the hex bits got a little larger and smaller and the same thing for the torx that they got a little larger... But I recognize that they ran out of room in the case... And the decisions have to be made about what they would include. Though I question including things like a Schrader valve tool and a kit designed primarily for computer and small device repair. I will say that I did also purchase their 4 mm driver kit which I also have a review up for and it is also excellent though it has a lot of the same pluses and minuses as this kit. I am pleased with both of them and as I have said many of my reviews which were positive I would purchase this kit again and that is the highest praise I can give to any tool even though in some ways I gave it some constructive criticism. I will say that I did also purchase their 4 mm driver kit which I also have a review up for and it is also excellent though it has a lot of the same pluses and minuses as this kit. I am pleased with both of them and as I have said in many of my reviews which were positive I would purchase this kit again and that is the highest praise I can give to any tool even though in someways I gave it some constructive criticism

Arrived quick and is exactly what I needed

Like I said above, I haven't been disappointment with any of iFixit products before, and it looks like that's not going to change anytime soon. This kit is compact and great for repair or maintenance of household items. The case is small, compact, and has about all the bits you might need for your home repair needs. Just a little warning: this is not for repair of small electronics such as tablets or smartphones or anything that has a TINY screw, this is for general repair of household items. I don't have anything else to say, just a great kill overall.

It is compact, well made and has a good case. Two dislikes: the markings on the tool size/description are very hard to read and the magnetic top comes off when it is tossed around in a backpack, fortunately the tools stay in place. Otherwise a great set, good quality.
