The Animal Desk Reference II: Essential Oils for Animals Review: Excellent, in-depth reference for using essential oils with animals! - I'll start my review off with this: if you are looking for a quick reference guide for using EOs with dogs and cats that gives you easy to follow specific recipes to use for your pet's ailment, this is not the book for you. You'll probably be happier with SpOil Your Pet or Essential Oils for Dogs and Cats. But if you are looking to deepen your knowledge of EOs and animals, the different ways to use them effectively (in the litter box? Who knew?!), and would prefer not to have to decipher what proprietary blend the author is referencing, then this book is for you. I have both books listed above, and while they are good resources, they are somewhat limited in scope and don't come close to this book. Not every oil works the same for each animal or condition, so I appreciate the wider variety of oils listed by Dr. Shelton for each ailment. For the review which stated that there was no indication of how many drops to use for an ailment, I have to disagree, there is a lengthy section on dilution and concentrations that addresses how much to use for each species (she even does the math for you if you don't want to figure it out yourself.) Additionally, under each oil and at the beginning of each species' section you can again find the recommended dilutions. There were also plenty of recipes included in the book (unsure what another review referred to), the difference here is that you are given a selection of oils to choose from to make a custom blend best suited to each individual animal's needs. I also appreciate the sections on birds and small animals, not everyone only has dogs and cats. (And if I ever get a Tauntaun or unicorn, I'll know how to treat them!) Again, if you just want or need a simple guide for your pets, look elsewhere. But if you prefer an in-depth, comprehensive resource and don't have a problem with taking the time to read a little bit more information to really learn how to use EOs with animals, this book is for you. Review: So informative! - We have two senior labs, one which recently either had a stroke or has a brain tumor per our vet. After much research, I believe he has vestibular disease. He also has laryngeal paralysis and arthritis. Our other lab is allergic to trees, grass, dust, just about everything. All of these problems are listed in the book and Dr. Shelton gives ideas of what to use for each ailment. I also appreciate the detailed description of each essential oil, it's possible benefits, and ways to use each. I am new to the world of essential oils, but I wanted to learn information quickly because I want to give my pup relief right now. But, I also wanted to make informed decisions about what to use and how to go about it. Dr. Shelton gives you the knowledge and confidence to make this happen. I am thrilled with this purchase and for me it was well worth the money. I also saw a comment on here about the author not giving the readers essential oil recipes for different animal ailments. I'm not sure which book this reviewer was reading because this book is full of recipes to use for countless ailments.

Pleasantly surprised at how informative it is
I've been in to EO for awhile but used sparingly directly on my dogs due to lack of knowledge and information. This book is amazing. It breaks everything down in easy explanations. It goes through individual oils, has recipes, goes through issues by conditions, and covers different administration methods. It also covers dogs cats ferrets horses birds and other animals. I cant recommend this book enough!

An Absolute Must Have for Those Working with Animals and Essential Oils!
This book is a must have for anyone using essential oils with animals. I am so impressed with and excited about it! There is massive detail on methods for application for animals, species specific conditions and the oils themselves. I have learned so much in the first couple hundred pages of this book! This is better than taking 10 classes! I can't say enough about it! Cindie Ambar, Aptos, California

Excellent resource for pet lovers and Vets
This is a large comprehensive book.. I am not a vet but just love my dog and love to share information with others so we can use essential oils safely and for benefit of all our animals. ~ Too many essential oil advocates are not aware that some oils are not safe around some animals unless used with special care and dosage.. Diffusion around cats especially has some risk. This is a great book to make sure you know what you need to know in general and even more for a problem with your animals. Thank you Dr. Shelton, Oily Vet for writing this.
