The Borrowers

Good read

For 14-year-old Arrietty and her parents, Pod and Homily, life changes when they befriend an Indian boy who has come to his aunt's house, to recover from rheumatic fever. Firstly, the boy finds Arietty and her family unusual because they are tiny people living under the floorboards of the house. Secondly, he finds out that they are known as the “Borrowers” for they survive by borrowing from the people of the house. As he continues to be enthralled by the Borrowers, his family begins to notice that he is, in fact, behaving in the most peculiar manner. Worse still, small items in the house go missing. One day, the aunt stays up to catch the thief when she notices the boy giving household items to the Borrowers. She goes berserk on finding out that they live under her floorboards. She decides to send the boy back home and then to smoke the tiny family out. Will they escape the terrible fate? Read and find out!

Incredible value. Lovely story - our 5 year old boy is in love with Arrietty from the anime. He follows the book read to him surprisingly well.

Loved this book at 8 years old and it was so fun to revisit it as an adult. Where my love of miniatures started.

Having watched the movie as a child, I was very curious to read the book as an adult and I can honestly say, I was not dissapointed! Such a lovely read and such depth to the characters. Very descriptive book and has a lot of deeper life lessons hidden within the story. Certainly worth a read for children and adults alike
