Is the body actually made of plastic, or is it painted wood product?

Yes it is all plastic. You can play it in a pool or bathtub :)

is this good for kids hands? or too difficult for small hands? looking for something for 7 year old. thanks.

It should be fine for kids hands, it has amply spaced frets but not too wide. The big plus is its durability. It has a nice tone also. I've bought it's wooden counterpart for each of my four grandchildren (ages 2 to 8) that have weathered well (the oldest uke is now 6) they came out with the plastic model after I bought the wooden ones.
