Necessary for all non-native English speakers - but you still might have an accent - here's why
This superb book and CD series is excellent and I use this for my ESL students. However, many are stating that they still have their accent. Granted, for many of my students, they are just beginning their English studies. An accent is a very difficult thing to overcome. However, I believe this book is commonly used in 'accent reduction' training, meaning, that it can help reduce the foreign accent in speakers.More important than trying to eliminate the foreign accent, the user of this book and CD will find they are able to communicate much better than before.Native English speakers often do not realize how we communicate in subtle ways in English. In English, it is perfectly understandable to say, "Not every white house is The White House." A European or an Asian speaker of English usually does not understand this sentence until it is explained to them, as the intonations and inflections of English are subtle. But it is exactly this subtlety that this book addresses. By emphasizing speech in a native manner, the non-native English speaker will be understood much more clearly. This is very important. When non-native speakers emphasis words improperly, they are often not understood - or, even worse, they might be understood as angry or hostile. This book is a must for all non-native speakers. It is a book to keep for one's lifetime and to review periodically. Using this book and CD series for a brief period is not going to produce the necessary results, but returning to this book over and over again, (and by listening to the tapes and repeating the words over and over again, will.)

Graduate Level with international teaching assistants
I just used the material over a 7 week course for international students who must test to improve their speaking/teaching scores for advancing as Teaching Assistants in our university. I have had my best improvement overall of the highest majority of my students than I have ever had before. Improvement and gains are related to this text. The students enjoy the text; they appreciate the voice of Ann Cook as a way to have weekly input for English as they listen to her instructions, modeling, and comments. They used it at 2 to 8 hours per week to get their results. This book is too much information over 2 months. I suggest a 4 month time frame to use it with your students. We will use it again and again. What a nice systematic, creative approach. I only suggest hitting some sounds from the last part of the book earlier if you have high stakes testing such as my students must take. This book is good for those students who come to you with without too many chronic problems in phonemes. Say, less than 5-8 phonemic "struggles." Thank you, Ann for a fine text to use in our International Teaching Program.

I like it but the dianogtis is pretty expensive
I love this book. The intonation is great I love the most. It have lots of sentences with intonation. But on the other hand, the gap for repeating is so close, hard to do it. It should have been slower. However the dianogtis test is 100 bucks which is pretty expensive compared to the book. It should have cost around 50 bucks or lower otherwise main purpose is to make money from the test not from the book. I like the technique la la la, me me me, duh duh duh, but I don't like the rubber band technique for everytime you stress on words. It seems doesn't work at all. I love the linking like woundn't he= wun don ni, is he= i zi and so on. In general, the intonation was great compared to the book of Master American Accent that I have costing 70 bucks, it has more detail on linking but I don't like the intonation which is boring. I'd recommend anyone for the Master... book if want more on linking words and pronunciation. If Mrs Ann Cook slower on speaking, and lower the dianogtis test, the book would be the best seller. I love the intonation. It was great compared to many books that I bought.

Can you understand me now?
Well, Ive been living in the united states for quite a while without any practice with my English. This is due to the embarrassing accent that I have. I would sometimes drive someone on the phone crazy because they couldnt understand the words that I was saying. So I decided to put my foot forward and take my accent further. Instead of practicing in the real world, I decided to take things slow and start with a book. I was suprise when this package came with a cd, mirror, and markers cause I was expecting something like a small ordinary book. An hour after listening the cd tracks and reading the book, english is somewhat becoming more acceptable and easy for me. And now, though not yet fully good with my english, most of my co-workers understand my sentences the first time that I say them.I would recommend this to those who can fully understand english but is having a hard time pronouncing words and sentences. This is my first book for accent training and I have a feeling that it'll be my last because I found everything that I will ever need.

I finally realize what is the problem with my speaking english.
(1) I bought this product just for a trial but it turned out very effectively. I have been in U.S. for 8 years. I never "tried" to improve my english because I think I am in U.S already and am in a english nature enviroment. there is no reason that I need to try to do something. it will come to me naturally. Yes. I see it happened in my listening, my reading and my writing. but for some reason, my speaking is lagging. I couldNOT find why. So i bought this product for a trial.(2) I just went through the first cd or more exactly just the first lesson. it solved all my problems. As the author said: Accent is combination of intonation, liaisions and pronunciation. the flow of the sentence is important than anything else.(3) try this product and then watch TV. you will see the progress and you will find that you are becoming more and more comfortable with your speaking.(4) all of all, it is a concept. the author brings us to a right track.
